zooming out

i just added a title sequence to my video that consisted of a still image (standard 720x480) and a text overlay. the overlay has white text and a black background. i set a chroma key color of white so the still will show thru the text and added a zoom effect where the overlay starts zoomed in in the middle of the view then zooms out until the text is not visible anymore. the thing is, the outside area of the still is still visible when the overlay is zoomed in when i would prefer the overlay take up the entire view space (cover the outside area of the still). i can't remember if i've done this before (seems to me i have) but if i have, i can't remember how to do it or if it's even possible. suggestions?

Use transparent text tile instead. Add a solid color media tile, and set transparency of it as you wish, and put the text tile on top of it, apply the zoom to the text tile only.

Hey, I really like the sound of this title sequence! Thanks, you two.

One of the problems may be that 720x480 isn't the right size for a still image. Use 655x480 or 720x528 instead. These sizes fit the frame just about perfectly. 720x480 is too wide & short.

in this situation though, i captured the stills directly from an actual scene in the video. is there a way to control the size of the still when capturing in VMS?

Above the preview windows, choose for 'best (full)', and then capture the still. You will now have a still image in best possible quality, same size and ratio als your video. After that, drag it to the timeline, and treat it like any other stills.

Oddly enough, if you use the save to disk method you get a 655x480 at 1.0PAR image, but if you use the copy to clipboard method you get 720x480 at 1.0PAR. The second method would probably be prefered if it set the PAR to 0.9091, but not many programs honor or preserve that setting. I suppose once you have 720x480 still loaded into Vegas you can right-mouse-button click on it, go into media properties, and manually set the aspect ratio to DV (0.9091). Just seems like an extra pain to have to do this every time. That's why i stick with 655x480.
