New Vegas, New Hardware

bitman schrieb am 11.09.2022 um 11:33 Uhr

I finally bit the bullet (or precisely, opened my wallet) and had fun building a new PC for Vegas, DR, Gaming etc... Not that my good old trusted i9900K in the Gigabyte Z370 Aorus Gaming 7 with 64GB RAM and NVIDEA RTX 2080Ti (FE) was a slough, but in 5 years the motherboard has been with me, I upgraded the processor from i7-8700K to i9-9900K and the video card from 1080Ti to RTX 2080Ti.

Now it is (again) time for an all-out PC with Intel Alder Lake CPU, PCIe Gen 4 SSD, DDR5 RAM and more video memory. I think the time was right now, as early adopter issues on those technologies surely been fixed by now and the prices of the graphics cards has gone down significantly (and availability up). I already build one for my son’s business last winter, staying behind was no option!

So here is my new current system:

·       OS: Windows 11 Pro 64, version 21H2

Try the benchmark with new and old systems and see how it compares: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1Exbi4K3hbxw6snJuisR1ble-0tCPVNcIcNnx0BAtSIM/

Nice. You got enough power in there for 2 3090's.

@Howard-Vigorita I guess I could, but I will not!

I focused my build on both performance and silence, 2 things hard to combine. My PSU is 1500w capable, so plenty of juice for alder lake and 2 Graphic cards. Using a second graphic card in the Z690 Aorus master motherboard would mean that second card is not directly talking to the CPU but has to go via the Z690 chipset and then via DMI 4.0 channel to the processor, not ideal, a bottleneck and shared with other resources (although not as much as in legacy systems with DMI 3.0). Furthermore, a second card can only operate in PCI express x4 mode in a PCI express 3.0 bus while the first (main) card can operate in PCI express x16 mode in a PCI express 5.0 bus (or lower) talking directly to the CPU...

Talking about silent operation, the reason for my over-dimension of the PSU is to be future safe, stable and silent as the PSU fan only kicks in above low and medium loads. The higher capacity you buy, the longer it will take before you here a fan...

Another silent component is the fractal design define 7 PCGH edition case, and the Noctua NH-D15s CPU cooler.

And the last silent component is the ASUS GeForce RTX 3090 TUF OC GAMING which has also a zero-fan mode at low load, and a dedicated HW switch on the card to select a second BIOS for silent mode. By default, that switch was set to performance, I switched it too silent mode.

This is the only thing keeping me wanting to stick with an AMD CPU when I upgrade, those additional PCIE lanes. VEGAS performs better with Intel in pretty much every other case, though.

Systems:

Desktop

AMD Ryzen 7 1800x 8 core 16 thread at stock speed

64GB 3000mhz DDR4

Geforce RTX 3090

Windows 10

Laptop:

ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo 32GB (9980HK CPU, RTX 2060 GPU, dual 4K touch screens, main one OLED HDR)

Got the same CPU cooler, both my PSU and GPU operate like yours, mostly no fan. The loudest component is an old AMD CPU cooler that I use for my VRMS, stays 15% speed normally but ramps up when CPU is drawing peak wattage - Needs replacing

@RogerS I have submitted my results in the web form;

Here is a summary of the Vegas benchmark/

Note: all run default, no overclock, however I had to disable all 8 slow E-cores (efficient but slow atom, no hyperthreading), so my Alder Lake system of 16 real cores is running in 8 P cores only (or I get much slower renderings, actually slightly slower than my old system) ...

FHD NVENC ... 36s

FHD QSV ........ 35s

FHD CPU ........ 42s

4K NVENC ... 58s

4k QSV ......... 52s

4k CPU ......... 94s

Average play framerate: 17.5 FPS

Thanks for that. Might be interesting to post one time for all cores so people can see the difference who don't see this thread.
