Scene Auto Detection

Pandorama schrieb am 23.03.2018 um 22:45 Uhr

I've been looking over the specs of the vegas products and have even watched some of the tutorial videos, but I am having a hard time determining if any of the products offers a feature that I am looking for in a video editing program.

In Windows Movie Maker, an older version, it has a feature that allows you to clip the video into smaller portions on import. When looking around for a video editing program more "advanced" (but not too advanced). I came across Filmora. It has an auto scene detection feature, but it loads the clips into the timeline. Not into the Media Library for me to choose and pick what scenes I want and what order I want the scenes to show up in.

So what I'm wondering is, does Vegas products offer such a feature where I can auto clip my videos into smaller segments and have those segments available in the Media Library to drop into the timeline. As well as keep those clips for possible later videos to change up the order and such if I need to. Like what Windows Movie Maker used to have.

Thanks for any help or suggestions!

Vegas should split files by timecode if you are capturing from tape as this is a feature of the 'vidcap' process.

I need something more similar to scene detection. The time code feature wouldn't work for my purposes. Thank you.

Vegas matters according to the recording made. If you did 5 minute scenes, it will import 5 minute scenes. If you did 2 hour scenes it will import 2 hour scenes.

Please tell us how your video has been recorded, to tape or digital media and in which format. maybe you can also tell us the camera model. Also keep in mind that any kind of "scene detection" is only possible if you physically pressed the start/stop button on your camera during recording.

My video is animated. Which is why the video timetag detection would not work. Windows Movie Maker and Filmora does just fine doing a scene detection without needing the start and stop of a camera. I just can't use Movie Maker because it is too old and the Filmora loads all the scenes into the timeline. I want to be able to select the clips from the Media Library. If this feature is not available with any of the Vegas products that is all I need to know so I can move onto looking at other video editing products. Thank you.

This is a question, not an answer: If you capture to the timeline using Filmora and save the project, won't all the clips be in the Media Library when you re-open the project?

You're looking for something that supports optical scene detection. Natively, Vegas does not.

However, if you are using a Sony version of Vegas through V13, you can download freeware Timeline Tools, an extension which does support optical scene detection. Here is the url http://www.nfatoys.com/moasoftwarellc/

If you're adventurous, there is also an Avisynth script for detecting scene changes. The output is a text file of frame numbers which can then be imported into Vegas.

In any case, optical scene detection is never bullet-proof. There will always be scene changes that are not detected and conversely, detected scene changes that are not. Having done this for lots of analog footage converted to DV, I found it usually takes as much time to make sure the scene detection was accurate as opposed to just doing it manually in the first place.

Hello, Pandorama !

I believe you may wish to look at the Pinnacle Studio. It used to do for me in the past this very job you need now.

...Though, I haven't being working with Pinnacle products for some years. However, page 48 of Pinnacle Studio User Guide says that scene detection is still in there today...

Unfortunately that isn't how it works. It only keeps it in the timeline.

Thank you for the information. This doesn't look like quite what I am looking for. My main reason why I want the scene detection is because it splits up the clips into manageable sizes so I can edit and take out the scenes I don't want. It doesn't matter if it's not absolutely perfect in it's scene detection, and I also want the clips/scenes that are detected to be put into the Media Library like with Windows Movie Maker. You can split the movie into clips on import and the clips are available through the Media Library to be dropped into the timeline.

Looking at the details it seems that Pinnacle Studio has the closest to what I am looking for. I am going to download the trial and see for sure that it has all the features I need. Thank you so much!

@Pandorama

Did you find your solution in Pinnacle Studio ? If not, you might try the Resolve Scene Detection:

I’m also locking for an optical scene detection to edit scanned old Super-8 footage. Does anyone know, if there is an export function/way from resolve to Vegas pro for example by an EDL file ?

Succes with Pinnacle Studio, but you have to buy it, a trial doesn't exist.

For DV material I used the ScenalyzerLive, which now is available for free. But the footage I want the optical scene detection does not contain data to be used for separation.

The Resolve Scene Detection looks quite good, but I would do the rest of teh work with Vegas pro. Does Resolve export EDLs ?

Marco. schrieb am 29.04.2019 um 11:14 Uhr

Vegas Pro imports Resolve's XML export.

The Resolve 15.3.1 Scene Detection works quite well and fast on a 12:53 long 1080p file, and is OK in the Resolve timeline. However exporting these cuts either with *FCPX_1.5(Resolve).fcpxml or  *(Resolve).xml does not give the correct timeline result in Vp16 for me.

Here's a short demo of Optical Scene Detection in HappyOtterScripts based on an original script written by John Meyer. Upon completion of processing, there is an option to add markers to the timeline.

As seen, to speed up processing, the original 2.7K project settings were first changed to 1280x720 and upon completion were returned back to the original. Inside the script, there is a single parameter which can be changed in the event there are too many or too few detected scene changes based upon the characteristics of the footage.

Could you get any markers added with other paramertes? In your sampe were some scene changes but no marker added - or did I miss some thing?

wwaag schrieb am 30.04.2019 um 07:57 Uhr

"Could you get any markers added with other paramertes?"

Not sure what you mean by this.

"In your sampe were some scene changes but no marker added"

No. For the demo, there were already events corresponding to different clips. It was a test to determine if the new events were correctly identified as scene changes. As shown, they were all correctly identified with no false positives. Again, this was just a test and in this case, it worked well. The success of any optical scene detection depends upon the footage you have and the threshold that you have set. It is possible to have false positives. E.g. if there is a camera flash, it would most likely trigger a scene change even though there wasn't one. The advantage of having markers is that you can easily go from marker to marker and determine if indeed there was a scene change or a false positive. Likewise, if you adjacent clips that are extremely similar, it is possible (even likely) that the scene change will not be detected.

The current version 1.0.2.56 does not support it. I just wrote the script and made changes to the supporting tool, AviDub, yesterday. I hope to have the next version out later this week or next week at the latest.
