Vegas 10e Reinstall on New System - Save/Export Options/Preferences?

Soniclight-2.0 schrieb am 14.11.2019 um 06:51 Uhr

Some context first:

Still using old system I built in 2011 (AMD on Gigabyte mobo), it could go any day, so built new Ryzen on MSI mobo system. Side by side, they are essentially equivalents only separated by time and progress - both 6-core CPUs.

As with old one on which I have Windows 10 64 on one SSD and Windows 7 64 on another, thanks to @ushere, I was able to up my Win 7 Home to Pro on its own SSD on the new system. But...

Vegas won't even fire up on it.
No error message, just nuttin' happens.
Hence, I need to totally uninstall and re-install.
Hopefully it will play nice with new hardware...

Whether it will or not, I still want to be ready to migrate certain things over in case it will work -- such as Render Templates and FX chains (or "Filter Packages"). I know or think I know how to do both of these:

-- Replace new default Render Templates folder with the original copied and saved elsewhere before uninstallation.

-- Do a pre-uninstallation Registry "Presets" export as per how-to that Nick Hope posted for said "Filter Packages" (partial view of it in Vegas on my old system in 2nd image) as I understand it -- BUT feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on this one.

Yet as subject line states and as shown in 1st screen capture, I would also like to save everything in Options/Preferences (settings in all tabs, not only "General" as shown), if such is possible.

I saw no in-Vegas way to do so, but perhaps someone knows what folder/s or directory contains that data so I can copy/paste it into the re-installed Vegas, be it \Appdata or Programs folder or folders.

Thank you.

(Minor BTW: I only have the screenshots because I'm back on my old system where Vegas works.)

________

It's late, I'm still using old system right now, so can't check** if VP is running in background (I don't recall that it ever has, at least not the main Vegas .exe). So I'll check tomorrow at some point.

(**I have to swap out monitors, mouse/keyboard, APC battery backup USB connection and move 2 logical drives between the two systems to be able to use one or the other - I can't do so simultaneously).

As to v12 offer, I'll email directly.

Could someone please respond to the core question of the OP? Thanks.

I think those options/preferences are stored in the registry. I suppose it might be possible to export and import a registry file from system to system or from version to version but my feeling is that it would be more trouble than it's worth, or just impossible. The fact that nobody has created a 3rd-party utility for that would seem to confirm that. I've always just manually set options and preferences in a new version or on a new system.

It is a common request to provide a way of doing this. We have, however, not been able to get this feature into the application to this point. The biggest problem is that the design of the preferences and other settings was not designed in a way to be easily ported between versions and that this code is so integrated throughout the application that it is a very monumental change to replace the current preference and settings mechanism.

With all that said, even if we did do this work to replace the preference code with something much more flexible, it likely would not be backwards compatible, meaning there would not be a way to import setting from old versions of VP that did not have the new preferences code.

This is something relatively high on our priority list, but, as is often the case, higher priority things may pop up that push this work to the back burner again.

"-- Replace new default Render Templates folder with the original copied and saved elsewhere before uninstallation."

Show hidden files in the Control Panel/Folder Options/View.

Custom Templates are found in these typical locations by type:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Sony\Render Templates\avc-mc

Thank you all for your responses. As to the OP's core query, I get the under-the-hood complexity of that part of Vegas. That said, it just occurred to me that I could simply take screenshots of the most important Preferences tabs on the current installation and then duplicate the settings in new one as best as I can (content of each tab's options may or may not be the same depending on if same or later version).

The Render Templates is something I already know how to do (most likely learned from this forum when upgrading from v.8 to v.10 years ago...).

OK, that's it. Thread has served its purpose.
All the best to all.
