3D problems aaargh!

Can you render a non-3D project without crashing?

You could try posting a small clip so others might try rendering?

I tried uploading a couple of clips to my photobucket account, but the uploads failed. Is there a way to upload it directly here? The sticky implies not.

I haven't done a 2D video with Vegas. I did take a non-GoPro MP4 and run it through the GoPro Cineform Studio 2.0 program to create an AVI and fed that into Vegas and it had black frame problems too. I didn't try rendering it.

I use DropBox and I'm able to place video clips there. If you don't have a DropBox account you would need to create one. It is free.

Maybe try a 2D with a your GoPro clip and see what happens. That would help narrow the scope on your troubleshooting if you are successful in 2D but not 3D.

Oh, and thanks for pointing out the GoPro decoder dll line in the traceback. I have forwarded that to GoPro to see if that's their dll or Sony's.

Just strung together three 2D Leopard shark clips from todays dive---one from a GoPro camera and two from another. My first attempt to render yielded this:

OMG!

It has occurred to me from the beginning that the ciniform files are the problem here and I'd have to try working with the original left and right MP4s directly. This was a pain in the butt in Pinnacle and I was dreading trying it in Vegas.

I just gave it a try and am amazed how easy it is so far. Vegas recognized the left and right clips and combined them automatically. The stereo alignment fx is trivially easy to use. These are the two things I was using CIneform for, and see no need if Vegas is going to cooperate so nicely.

I've no idea how this is going to go as I continue to add clips and try to render...but am quite encouraged.

For what it's worth, I downloaded one of the *.MOV files. I couldn't play it on VLC Player nor would Vegas recognize anything but the audio. I'm sure I don't have the right codec for it.

I've never played with 3D but I think the combining the left and right files was supposed to be a selling point for Vegas on 3D. There is "real" 3D where you have two cameras, and I've heard of poor man's 3D where you take the same clip and use it twice. I haven't spent any time with 3D because, for me at least, it's hard enough to get pristine underwater footage without the added complexity of 3D. But I'm ready and waiting with my glasses when you finally get a good render : ) Should be very cool!

I found the crash reports in our database, thanks. As Old Smoke suggested, the crash is in "C:\Program Files (x86)\CineForm\Tools\CFHDDecoder.dll". The actual crash happened in the FileIOSurrogate.exe process, which is where all of the 32-bit plugins reside, rather than vegas120.exe. Because it's a third-party DLL that crashed, I can't dig in to investigate the cause.

Unexpectedly, you also have a 64-bit CineForm plugin ("C:\Program Files (x86)\CineForm\Tools\CFHDDecoder64.dll") running in the main Vegas process. I personally have very little experience with CineForm so I can't say whether this is normal or abnormal, but I find it a little surprising.

Thank you for checking Chris. It will be interesting to see what my GoPro contact has to say about that DLL. It's not clear to me why Vegas would be accessing it instead/in addition to the 64 bit one, and that's something you might check into.

Kimberly, You can see my 3D videos here:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLjPdhMk9M_Sl9Tl1L1hIrw/videos

You can select the 3D viewing mode, or disable it, by clicking on either the 3D icon or the gear icon on the bottom of the YouTube frame.

I am using the GoPro 3D hero system---two Hero 2 cameras connected by a cable in a housing. Both cameras are synchronized so this is a true 3D system. For the surface shots I use an AIPTEK 3D camera.

Cool shark footage!

We call 'em zebra sharks in Micronesia, They are yellow and have much smaller spots but the juveniles look just like your sharks. I saw juveniles in the aquarium in Guam last year. So tiny and so cute.

Glad to hear you got your 3D working too : )

In the meantime, I have abandoned Cineform Studio 2.0 entirely and am doing everything in Vegas. Here's the first result:

Finally got my first response from Sony today: they say it's a Cineform problem.

GoPro says it's a Sony problem.

Sheesh! Why won't GoPro and Sony actually work together to resolve this?

Hey, hey, I replied last week. Doesn't that count? :-) I realize I didn't solve your issue, but I tried pretty hard.

For the record, I never said it was GoPro's fault. I just said that the crash originated in their DLL. It's possible that we're using their DLL incorrectly or that the file is at fault or their DLL has a bug, or even that their DLL is a victim of a completely unrelated bug. The problem is that I can't distinguish any of those scenarios right now.

We have been indeed been working with GoPro on several issues (build 770 even calls out a GoPro-specific hang in our code). Our GoPro colleagues have been very friendly and helpful.
3d87c4 wrote on 12/2/2013, 6:50 PM
It does, and I appreciate it.

But, Sony's official response was late and unhelpful.

One of the reasons I bought Vegas was because it could use the Cineform AVI's, now it can't, and both companies are telling me "This is all the further assistance we are able to provide on this matter."

I actually like working in Vegas alone, but wish I had both options. I was able to align the 3D clips with more precision than I can in Vegas, so far.

FWIW: my contact at GoPro is Jake Segraves

Also, I don't discount the possibility the problem lies in my computer, or the combination of programs & updates therein. Please let me know if there's any information I can provide that will help. I'm afraid my eyes still glaze over when posts get deep into codecs etc. but it's sinking in.
