4k playback kind of sucks Vegas Pro13

DumplingandDots wrote on 2/17/2016, 7:42 PM
I have a brand new 2016 computer that cannot playback 4k video from an iPhone properly. I believe my computer is pretty powerful and I'm concerned with this issue. My partner has an almost three year old MacBook pro with half of my ram and it plays back the same 4k video with ease. Can someone please clarify what is going on and is there a way to fix this? Thank you.

Computer Brand/Model : Dell

Operating System: Windows 10 64-bit Home

RAM: 16gb

Processor: Intel I7 6500U 2.50ghz

Video Card: AMD Radeon R5 M335

What application are you using for playback?
What application is your partner using for playback?

my partner is using iMovie

That's quite simple. iPhone files are QuickTime files and that just works better on a Mac. Transcode the files and you should be ok.

lol I definitely thought that was the issue. I'm still a bit wet behind the ears when it comes to editing video with this much information, what would be the best way to transcode the data? Also on another note, the video is displaying incorrectly,it's vertical. How do I fix that? I thought Vegas would do it automatically. In iMovie it does it automatically. Thank you by the way!

I am not sure if the free Catalyst Browse can read it but I would give it a try. If it works, transcode to XAVC-Intra.

OldSmoke I truly appreciate your suggestion!

Catalyst Browse read it well and I transcoded per your suggestion! it runs much smoother, thank you! the only thing is that the audio is off from the lip movement. its almost like those old kung Fu movies.

The problem is that iPhones record with variable frame rates and that is where it becomes complicated but I am the wrong one to advice on that. In the future, try a recording app such as FilMic Pro. It should be able to set the frame rate to a constant one; it does for 60p. I can't test 4K I only got a regular iPhone 6.

Certainly the fact that your partner has kept it within an Apple ecosystem might be helping.

Another thing to keep in mind is that (if you're playing the media on the Vegas timeline) Vegas' timeline incurs quite a bit of overhead. For example, you'll find that Vegas's trimmer performance is a lot better than it's timeline performance. The timeline is doing a lot under the hood.

If this is your new laptop,

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834298761

Then it is not enough hardware to run 4K well in Vegas. You can certainly get by with it, or edit proxy. There are 4th Gen I7 mobile CPUs that have 2x the performance of the 6500U, and the 335M GPU has only about 1/2 the GFLOP of the VP11 recommended card from 5 years ago.

Just because its new does not make it better than mac hardware. Apple does a good job of selecting performing hardware overall. Dell has a tendency to select the hardware the maximizes their profit margins. HP is even worse than Dell.

It's no surprise that QuickTime files playback smoother and edit easier on a Mac. That's the native format. If you want to edit iPhone video effortlessly, your best editing experience is going to be on a Mac. Otherwise you need to transcode the footage to something a PC can handle, and for 4K you need a pretty powerful PC. Sony recommends an 8-Core minimum for Vegas Pro.

wow I feel really stupid, especially I was told this computer will handle 4k with no issues. smh.....

anyway I have a new disturbing issue. i'm using a sony 4k format from their new camera the a6300 and I'm running through the same issues of jagged playback and vegas crashing. if this is a sony's format should I still be experiencing this issue? is my brand new computer really that sucky?? I'm about to lose my mind because video editing is becoming frustrating. its nothing like editing audio in regards to the smoothness and speed.

I just went to help my son buy a laptop for his work and was surprised to see the limitations of the "i7" processors with "U" suffixes. Your processor is a dual core with hyper-threading with a middling base core clock.

For a desktop machine, you should probably have one of these at a minimum. It still may not be the best for editing 4K.

next time ill be more aware with specs in regards to i7's. I've upgraded from an amd and all I heard was how powerful i7's are. and of course I get the weak one lol....thanks for that info!

You purchased a laptop processor. I would take it back and exchange it for a real desktop processor. I wouldn't live with it for 4 or 5 years.
