6K GH5

Lengthy post re GH5 Hevc .mp4 files not viewable in V15,V14 concluded with this comment by Nick (repro only relevant part to this comment)

"The half-length video stream and green frames are now fixed in VP15 build 261. The footage still scales down to 4096px, as that is VP15's maximum resolution."

VP16 seems to have the same limitation. Project Properties won't be coaxed above 4096 yet Event Properties show the proper, i.e. 4992px, resolution. I assume that Project overrides Event thus requiring a Vegas fix at some point if rez above 4K is to be properly imported.

You've observed correctly that media with higher pixel dimensions can be imported and handled. Vegas will require a fix at some point if media with higher pixel dimensions are to be exported. If we could export the media many of us would have no place to play it.

OK, thank you. To be sure though, are you saying that Event Properties rule? That is, the "6K" media is successfully imported to the timeline at 4992px despite the Project Properties? (I also have no place to play it but am interested in using the scaling benefits).

Your media is still handled at 6K resolution, it just gets downscaled to 4K in your project. So, if you wanted to use the extra pixels to be able to pan/crop into the 6K image, you can zoom in on it some, even at 4K, and not lose pixel resolution.

The 4096x4096 just restricts the size of the video you can output from Vegas, it can still read the higher pixel counts of media that goes above that.

Thanks! I was still confused as to the meaning/usefulness of project properties when event properties and render settings seemed to be able to be...well, whatever. Poking around, I found this...

with the Griffen post being the most thorough. Putting it in context of your post, I conclude that I do NOT see the footage exactly as recorded but, as you point out, downscaled. If so, then Magix should remove the limitation in the interest of accurate viewing of the image. Also, the downscaling would appear to occur only in the width dimension as the height dimension is not altered in the project properties. In turn, this suggests not too bad a viewing skew as the difference between 4992 and 4096 isn't toooo great. However, if true, it still presents a WYSIWYG problem as the scaling will not represent the actual output.

Now you're going down a deep deep rabbit hole :) Is your monitor 6K? Then the image WILL be scaled.

There may come a time when 8k monitors are common, but not soon.

In the meanwhile, is there really any practical difference for an editor viewing a 6k GH5 file (not really 6k btw) on a UHD monitor vs a "6k" monitor?
