A bit slow preview screen

MikeKat wrote on 11/12/2023, 5:09 AM

Hello,

I got a new notebook, i think a good one.

Intel I9 13900 - 32gb ram - geforce rtx 4060 8gb with oled 4k display - price €2199

I am a drone content operator and when importing my 4K 60fps content (h264) it gonna be very slow. When the preview screen is in 'preview quality = auto' the preview screen is losing a lot of frames. It goes low to 4-5 fps in the preview screen (instead of 60) and editing is almost impossible. I know i can make proxies but that took too much time for my work.

Any ideas how to speed up the preview screen? In draft quality the video quality is too bad to get sharp details for editing....

Of course i have changed the RAM to 0mb and gpu acceleration to my gpu4060. I thought my computer RAM and gpu are good enough...... 😔

The files i using are MP4, 3840x2160, 60fps, 4:2:2

4K 60p AVC may or may not preview well on a system such as yours, depending on a number of things, including the whims of your Muses.

Others can give you advice about decoder settings and other things to try. For me, the solution is to build Proxy files. Here's how to find out about Proxy files:

What version of VEGAS is this?

Put dynamic ram preview back to the default- it speeds up preview.

The CPU isn't a K processor, right, so the only decoding you have is NVDEC?

I see your final comment- 10-bit 4:2:2 AVC doesn't decode with any GPU on the market. Is 10 bit 4:2:0 an option? If so that should work well. Otherwise 10-bit 4:2:0 HEVC may work better, worth testing your drone's settings and see what plays well in VEGAS.

@MikeKat
Here I see that your processor has also the iGPU 770.
Is that one selected or selectable in Options/File I/O for decoding?

Thanks.

Default settings of RAM is 200mb? I use Vegas 20 for now.

In case of the drone, i use DJI Air 3 and Mavic 3 Pro both almost professional drones. There are little things to change in case of the options. You may save as MOV or MP4. But further almost no options.

I can choose MP4/MOV (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, HEVC/H.265)

Also, with H264 it is also not that smooth i was hoping for. 4k playback is smooth but when adding transitions or some effects the fps goes fast lower

@J-v where can i find this? I have geforce 4060 selected as gpu accelerator.

For VEGAS 20 the default is 5% of ram I believe. Just doubleclick the slider and it should return to the default.

MP4/MOV shouldn't make any difference but maybe test every option and take a look at the result in MediaInfo. 8-bit or 10-bit 4:2:0 should play back fine as h264 and possibly as h265 as well. Expect better performance if you have an Intel integrated GPU on your CPU. Look for it in preferences/ file io in VEGAS and windows device manager under display adapters. If it's not there check your bios/UEFI.

@MikeKat
That kind of files play without any problem at full range at preview/Full at my laptop.

Thanks all. Will try this options for sure. JAQ: why is it better to select an internal gpu instead of a better geforce?

RogerS wrote on 11/12/2023, 8:50 AM

Intel has more experience and better capabilities for media decoding than NVIDIA or AMD and it works especially well in VEGAS. I built my system around a CPU with UHD770 for that reason.

GeForce excels at calculations/3D, so use it for the timeline and Fx.

For encoding/rendering, Intel QSV and NVENC are pretty much a wash for performance.

HEVC files are really problematic with lots of lagging and AVC is a bit smoother and stays more around 60fps than the HEVC.

But when adding gpu accelerated effects from BorisFX, the whole videopreview is almost crashing and slap back to 1.fps 😔

Above the image as it is at that File I/O. Any to change here?

All totally expected and normal, including Boris FX. Make sure "GPU Acceleration of Video Processing" is checked in Preferences->Video, and that your GPU drivers are the latest recommended. You will get additional discussion on your drivers using a Forum Search.

Not that I can see, unless the drivers are not good enough.
For that you have to provide us a screenshot of the result of Help/Check for Driver Updates like this one

Yes, acceleration is checked and the GTx 4060 is selected.

Your settings look fine.

HEVC development is continuing with VP 21 with the newest update giving some performance improvements. I suspect it will continue to get better so consider sn upgrade at some point

For Fx heavy scenes, shift m is your friend.

MikeKat wrote on 11/12/2023, 5:48 PM

What is shift M?

I tried the first big edit tonight. Notebook is just smooth as butter when put 4k video in the timeline only. But when i tried to create a intro with my logo in png with some pan and zoom and some texts, the whole thing is getting crazy and lagging.

Is this normal?

RogerS wrote on 11/12/2023, 7:12 PM

Shift M is a prerender (saves to disk), shift b is a ram preview.

Yes, a few tracks especially with movement won't preview in real time. Shift + b is what I'd use for a few seconds transition or intro.
