a7s III Clips will not work/load in VP18 (but will work in VP17)

Vegas Pro 18 build 334

I tried importing some a7s III clips to my main editing PC today.

XAVC-S 4K 120p clips will not import at all – either by dragging and dropping or using the import menu.

XAVC-S 4K 24p and 60p clips load into VP18, but the display is green (clips will “play” with the audio).

I also have Vegas Pro 17 build 452

ALL of the above clips I mentioned load just fine in VP17.

I direct copied this folder to a USB Drive and then to my secondary PC, and all seem to load fine in VP18 on that PC.  Doing this I know that the files were transferred correctly the first time from the SDXC card.   I am not sure what is up with my main PC.

This is a fresh installation of Windows 10 (2004)

I tried installing “updated” AMD drivers from the dialog in VP18.  I tried both the Adrenalin and Enterprise versions, doing a “factory reset” with each installation.  I already had the enterprise drivers installed, but reinstalled just in case – and again after the Adrenalin drivers.

I also reinstalled VP18

After some more attempts, it does seem that XAVC-HS 4K clips do load – which is actually the codec I expected the least from.  Although playback is not smooth at all.

MAIN PC: Ryzen 9 3900x, 64GB RAM, Radeon VII GPU, Crosshair VII Hero, X570
SECONDARY PC: i7-5960x, 32GB RAM, Radeon RX 480, Rampage V Extreme, X99

Can you paste the media info for 1 of those files?

That is interesting because the H.265 does seem to be working for me (that is the XAVCS-HS right?) It is the regular XAVC-S that is failing.

That because you were not using 10 bit 4.2.2 hev. This will crash Vegas.

XAVC-HS is the HEVC variant. None load, but the 4:2:0 version can be loaded if pcm audio is stripped and replaced with AAC audio

The clip I posted mediainfo for is the XAVC-S I am having isues with. Not the HEVC.

I KIND of have this figured out - but I had to undo an issue I "fixed" previously when VP18 was released.

So, the frustration continues.

I had issues on sped up play back on VP18 release: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/speeding-up-playback-performance-vp17-vs-vp18--122819/

I ended up switching the hardware decoder to off and enabling legacy decoding as turning the hardware decoder to on seriously hurt my speed while scrubbing through footage.

Well, I turned it back on and now the files load into VP18. Now my scrubbing speed is crippled again, but I can play the clips.

Again, VP17 has no issues, and from what I was told was by switching to a legacy decoder in VP18 it was supposed to match the playback the VP17 settings (VP17 was/is still smoother on higher playback speeds by the way). My secondary PC still has the legacy decoder option selected and clips load into VP18 just fine.

So, why the problem now?

As for the other topic this thread seemed to have split into about XAVC-HS 4K:

I was able to import XAVC-HS 4:2:0 10bit in all bitrates (100M, 50M, 30M) with PCM audio just fine into VP18. The only issues were with the 4:2:2 versions.

I am not worried about this as I am sure it is more intensive to edit this format right now and would rather stick to XAVCS and eventually XAVCS-I when I can afford v90 or CFE cards for the cameras. I am just posting my findings.

Here is the dropbox link to the exact file I used below:

EDIT: Don't mind the crappy and loud focusing cheap 50mm lens I had on for this clip test :P

I tried your file and as you say loaded into VP18 just fine. This is the file I was testing with. It seems almost identical to yours except it's 50mbit/s. Strange. It loads fine in other editors. XAVC-HS is not a very useable format in 2020, even with transcodes HEVC and the lack of hardware decoding at 4K makes it so slow
