Action Cam MP4s can not be opened, WHY?

Rick-George wrote on 9/29/2024, 4:24 AM

Recent purchase of Action Cam. The cam uses Sony technology. Wanted to edit the movies with Sony Vegas, but it will not open the MP4 movies. I have changed the file permissions to full control. Windows 11 Media Player opens and plays the file and so does Corel Video Studio. I could try re-saving the MP4 files in Corel, and then see if Vegas opens them. Corel does not have as many editing features as Vegas. Really annoying!

@Rick-George What's in your MP4s? Please post full media info - instructions here https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

Also please clarify which Vegas product you are using and its version and build number.

What is the action camera? Also, what are that recording settings including format (e.g. AVC or HEVC) that have been set? Many modern action cams seem to use HEVC inside the MP4 wrapper these days especially for 4K

From your previous post, you are using Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 11. Is this still the case? If yes, it is likely that SVMSP11 is not able to open MP4/HEVC media. I've just tried a GoPro MP$/HEVC video in my SVMSP13 and it won't accept the MP4/HEVC video on to the timeline.

Or have you since upgraded to Vegas Pro 21 or 22? If yes, either should accept MP4/HEVC media.

Please note that the last version of Sony Vegas Pro was version 13 released some 10 years ago - all subsequent Vegas Pro releases have been under MAGIX ownership.

Thanks, problem solved. Re-saved 4K MP4s in Corel original format and resolution, and now Vegas will open them. At the moment I am too busy to investigate why Vegas will not open original MP4s. At least this work-around works OK. This post can now close.
