Add Video whilst keeping clip resolution intact

What is the recommended method to add video footage to tracks/timeline in Vegas Pro 12 in such a way that the footage is not scaled to project size but rather the footage remains its original resolution? Example: Adding a 720x576 clip to a 1920x1080 project whilst keeping the resolution of the clip at 720x576?

There is probably a switch that makes this easy but I can't remember which one it is. You can achieve your desired result as follows:

With Project Properties set to 1920x1080 add the 720x576 clip to the timeline.

Place the cursor on the first frame of the clip on the timeline.

At the clip level select Pan/Crop.

In the Video Event Pan/Crop dialog box select 16:9 in the Preset drop down.

Under Position, type 1920 for the width and 1080 for the height.

The media clip will occupy 720x576 pixels in a 1920x1080 pixel display.

If you have multiple clips to add to the timeline with the same characteristics:

Select the first clip, right-click and select copy.

Select the new clips, right-click and select Paste Event Attributes.

Thanks John,

I'd forgotten to change the preset.

I have been using Vegas from version 8 and I was almost sure there is/was a "Preference" setting for this.

But thanks again. This will do just fine :).

There is, but not a "Preference"..

In "Project Settings", uncheck "Adjust source media to better match project or render settings".

Thanks Tom,

I have that unchecked in all my custom Project settings I use but that alone won't do the trick i.e. I still need to modify clip Pan&Crop settings as John suggested above.

Hmmm...
Guess one's never too old to learn.
Thanks...

There is a button in pan/crop: stretch video to fill frame. In this case pan/crop rectangle becomes cropping window
Use track motion to move picture around screen.

I don't think there's a single switch to solve this so John's advice is probably "it".

There's a reason why Vegas does this. Vegas is a resampling editor, meaning it takes your picture and audio at mismatched sizes, framerates, and sample rates and tries to match it to the project.

This was a core feature of Vegas and made it unique when it was first introduced. You could drop anything onto the timeline and Vegas would make it work. It's just inconvenient when you don't want it.
