Adding event FX causes Preview window to freeze?!

RedRob-CandlelightProdctns wrote on 1/31/2023, 8:10 PM

Just tried the latest V20 build on my super-speedy Dell laptop, and having a weird issue.

Timeline is filled with clips.. All is well. Video preview window works in all settings.

Add a video FX (Brightness/Contrast, AutoLooks, others) to one of the clips on the timeline -- the preview window output freezes?! I say the "output freezes" because the frame counter keeps moving properly, and timeline cursor moves. But the output in the preview window is completely frozen regardless of where I move the timeline play head. Disabling the VFX on the clip does not restore proper behavior, but removing the VFX from the clip immediately restores normal behavior?!

I updated my video card driver in case that was relevant -- and did a reinstall of V20 (the new pop-up splash screen had been reading "Vegas Movie Studio" instead of "Vegas Pro" and prompts had weird text on them.. reinstalling fixed that issue!), but have not done extensive other troubleshooting yet.

I can send info on video card and such later if that's helpful, but thought I'd ask if this is a known problem others have encountered? Not happening on my desktop machine.

@RedRob-CandlelightProdctns - This is horrid! However, I can't repro your exact issues, as I don't have your Media. To me, it would apear the B326 is having a bad time in doing the Math with your FXs combined the Media you're using. I did some research over your last issues, viz FXs and Freezing:

Does this sound familiar?

Of course I remember that thread :-) I even added a comment to the thread noting that B326 seemed to have fixed that problem on my desktop where it had been occurring! :-)

This is different a bit -- happening on my laptop (not desktop), causing output to freeze (not go black or crash), happening on event VFX (not media), and happening even when the effect is disabled (unchecked) in the VFX event FX chain! (only removing it from the chain gets playback to occur again)

I also noticed on that laptop that even without FX, when resizing the preview window, if the "enable preview scaling" option is enabled on the preview, it works but if one dimension extends (or shrinks) to not fit the entire aspect ratio in the window, I see it stretch/distort the image before resizing it to the proper size... this never happened in the past. Don't know if it's related. The laptop has an NVIDIA graphics card, my desktop is RX470... didn't have these issues prior to this build.

Hmm, haven't seen this on my laptop or desktop (freezes or preview distortion) but that sounds terrible. For the freeze can you go into task manager, find the frozen task and I think right-click to create a dmp file to share with support? Detailed info about freezes might help them resolve it faster.

@RogerS  The app is not frozen. The picture in the preview window freezes. The frame-counter keeps going in the bottom of the preview window (stops and starts properly when playing) and Vegas keeps working -- the app does not freeze, just the picture.

The picture window freezes and then the program whites out and there's still ... below the window? That's what I've seen.

If it's just playback that fails, maybe that's something with the GPU I haven't seen.

@RedRob-CandlelightProdctns - Just to clarify, all works on the Desktop? Yes? It’s only with the laptop that you’re having Preview issues? Correct? Same Media through both Devices?

Looks a bit the same as I saw here: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/problems-with-nvidia-driver-526-98--138196/
Untill now my best solution is rolling back the Nvidia drivers to version 522.30.
Since than all newer drivers behave the same on laptop
