BUG! Crash on VFX1.OFX adding basic MediaFX with "Preview" preview!

RedRob-CandlelightProdctns wrote on 11/21/2022, 10:22 PM

I'm just starting my finishing work on a project after my main editor finished her MultiCam edit.

I'm trying to add Brightness and Contrast VFX to one of my 4K media, and right after the MediaFX dialog appears, Vegas Crashes with this error:

Problem Description
   Application Name:    VEGAS Pro
Application Version: Version 20.0 (Build 214)
   Problem:             Unmanaged Exception (0xc0000005)
   Fault Module:        C:\Program Files\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro 20.0\OFX Video Plug-Ins\Vfx1.ofx.bundle\Contents\Win64\Vfx1.ofx
   Fault Address:       0x00007FFCEC79F5F0

I can add this to an event without it crashing -- I can add it to a TrackFX and it does not crash -- but adding it to any Media causes this crash. Tried with both 4K and 1080p media clips. Also tried with "Border" VFX and same crash/error. I've used these FX for countless years without issue on this computer.. grrr.

This is a repeatable problem. I created a new project, inserted a media file, right-click choose Media FX, add "Brightness and Contrast" click "OK" -- MediaFX dialog appears and then Vegas crashes.

  • Performance Monitor does not show my CPU, memory or either GPU utilization anywhere near max when this happens.
  • I downgraded my Radeon RX 470 driver to the Vegas-recommended WHQL driver (the description says "Adrenalin 22.5.1 Recommended WHQL", but after installing and rebooting, it's showing as System Version 30.0.15021.11005)
  • When this is happening, GPU acceleration of video processing is set to "OFF", File/IO tab showing hardware decoding taking place on "Auto" (QSV on Intel HD Graphics 630). "Enable legacy HEVC decoding" is enabled. I share this info realizing that this probably is NOT a decode issue.

To make things more curious, I enabled "GPU acceleration of video processing" so it's now using my Radeon RX 470. Different results with this, but still not correct.

  • Adding Brightness/Contrast to the Event still works properly
  • Adding Brightness/Contrast to the Media results in a "BLACK" (blank) image on the preview monitor (but does not crash)
  • Adding "Color Grading" to the Media works properly. Adding Brightness/Contrast to the Media AFTER the Color Grading effect in the Media FX chain and Brightness/Contrast works correctly! If I put it before the Color Grading FX, black image in the output and none of the Brightness/Contrast controls have any impact

HELP?!

(and yes -- I realize there are many workarounds -- like using the Color Grading panel on the media since that seems to work -- or applying the effect to the ALL events using that media -- but something is not working properly, so getting to the root of this is important)

OK -- more strangeness. With the Radeon card enabled, I see my image blanking out part-way through a pan/crop. When disabled, it crashes when it gets to that same spot.

Here's a short video showing this oddness.

Seeing as my editor has been having a bear of a time getting through her last two edits without frequent crashes, and now I'm having this media-level FX problem (and Pan/Crop weirdness too), I'm really wondering if a Windows update isn't conflicting somehow?

I noticed that this crash seems to occur in my test project when the preview window is set to <Preview-Auto> but NOT on <Preview-Full>. When I enabled my RX470 card on the test project with 1080p footage the result here is the same.

However, when tested with 4K footage, I was getting the black screen instead of footage regardless of the preview mode.

Is this helpful info?

That's very helpful info. I see in your signature it looks like you are on AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 22.5.1, the recommended one for Vegas, so that really should work...

Is the media HEVC? Does unchecking enable legacy HEVC make any difference (it shouldn't but...)

Beyond that I hope other AMD users can see if they're having similar issues or devs can look into it.

I'm also experiencing an odd SCALING issue (no, not a skin condition).

RX470 Enabled

-- Preview mode set to Good (any) or Preview (Full) -- looks OK

-- Preview mode set to Preview (Auto) -- preview image zooms in super-tight

RX470 Disabled (No Video Acceleration)

-- Vegas crashes when preview mode set to Preview (Auto)

This only seems to happen when the media has an effect on it. Source media is 1080p, nothing unusual about it -- happens regardless of which media is on the timeline.

I'll keep trying different RX470 drivers, but since that scaling issue occurs when GPU Accelerated is set to NONE, doesn't this rule out the RX470 driver as the issue?

I installed back to the WHQL Adrenalin edition 22.5.1. Better, but not proper.

  • With NO media effect added to a media, and no GPU acceleration selected, all preview modes work proper.
  • With NO media effect added to a media, and GPU acceleration set to RX470, all preview modes work proper.
  • With a Media effect added (e.g. Brightness/Contrast), and GPU accel set to RX470, Preview (Auto) makes output blank (transparent). I can see color bars ("test pattern") which are on the track beneath it.
  • With a Media effect added, and no GPU acceleration selected, Vegas crashes when video preview mode set to "Preview (Auto)"

Same problem still happening... I started making a video to demonstrate but it crashed part of the way through... demonstrates the problem well enough.

  1. Add a video clip to the timeline
  2. Add a media FX to the event's media (e.g. Sharpen)
  3. The output in the preview is corrupt. It may or may not crash Vegas

Adding to the event level it is fine.

Hey @RogerS.. nope. I disabled video decoding and video accel. preview and that causes it to immediately crash when media FX is added. Disabling high DPI scaling didn't have an effect.

Keep in mind -- this problem ONLY occurs when adding at the media-effect level, not event effect.

For sake of "more is better than less", here's a short video showing the video card info (although both cards are presumably not being used), and showing with brightness/contrast that it works fine at both Track and Event levels, but crashes immediately as a media level effect.

@RedRob-CandlelightProdctns I get identical results with Nvidia active for black screen or Vegas crashing with GPU disabled. So it's not actually a driver problem, even if a solution is to return to a previous driver. I guess you still could go to an earlier driver and hope next driver update doesn't cause the problem. I don't see the display problem normally because I rarely use preview. I bet there's other problems to find

That Steve guy should test this, the one that permanently has GPU turned off for stability. Even that guy isn't safe now

RedRob-CandlelightProdctns wrote on 12/5/2022, 11:14 PM

@Former user  Are you saying you're able to reproduce this same problem, and you have an NVIDIA system? Adding a media-level FX for you also causes crash or wrong output in preview window, but not when added as event-level effect?

Ya ya .. I actually forgot that putting my preview output into "good quality" is a useable workaround (thank you!), as is pasting the media FX to all events using the media. I can at least keep editing with it using one of these workarounds.. hopefully the bug will be squashed in next build.

Anyone from Vegas Dev team able to confirm the priority of this repeatable problem?

@RedRob-CandlelightProdctns Yeah I meant I normally have the preview monitor on good or best, but not preview or draft. I have the identical problem as you with quality set to preview and resolution half or quarter. Track and Event Brightness/Contrast no problem, media FX will cause black screen with GPU active, or crash with GPU turned off

Because I know since VP19b643 and onwards, Vegas becomes permanently corrupt if you mess with it too much, and as I don't normally use preview quality I only copied you and did nothing else. I want to keep it stable as it's crashing less than VP19b550 which was a reasonable build

Thanks for the video showing your settings. Here I have GPU on for preview acceleration (NVIDIA) and Intel for decoding.

In 19.550 I didn't have issue adding brightness and contrast at the media level though did find the annoying issue where changes don't show up on the preview window until it's closed. I can't revert drivers as it fixes a crashing issue which has plagued me in Vegas since spring "Dell XPS 9560 may crash and reboot when using desktop applications [3737715]"

In 20 the preview works as expected and no issue with brightness and contrast. This is with my GTX 1050.

With 20 I then turned off GPU in preferences/video and file io. I modified brightness and contrast at the media level but there were no problems.

RedRob-CandlelightProdctns wrote on 12/6/2022, 12:25 AM

So in latest V20 ---

  • I have the problem with AMD card
  • @Former user can reproduce it with his NVIDIA setup
  • @RogerS cannot reproduce. Roger -- one thing of note here is that this seems to only rear its ugly head when the preview window has quality set to "Preview Quality". In your test, what do you have your preview window quality set to?

Preview/auto.

I just did a test with my desktop- NVIDIA RTX 2080 Super. In 19.550 I applied the same media Fx to an XAVC-S AVC UHD clip and no errors.

In 20 I tried the same with a bunch of different types of media (including HEVC, AVC, variable framerate phone footage) but couldn't replicate. Preview/auto as well.

Both systems are using the latest NVIDIA studio driver, desktop & laptop variants.
