I couldn't get it to install on my machine (XP SP2) even after several tries and reading the install instructions from adobe (yes, I pointed the files to the same folder).
The files only mention Win 2000, NOT XP. Adobe sent me a thank you note for registering it, however!
The install kept getting stuck on "insert disc 2". Clicking OK and then launching the disc 2 .exe, unpacks some files, but doesn't install them.
Finally gave up on it.

KPLO,
When the run the original EXE files, I used the default for the first disk. On the 2nd and 3rd disk, I had to point them to the subfolder that the first disk created. I was getting the same error you got until I did that. It does run on XP. No problem there.
so, I downloaded Premier Pro and tried it on my Win7 64 bit and it worked but was slow and clunky and annoying (just like I remember) compared to Vegas, so, I will never use it.

Are you talking about Premiere Pro CS2 or Premiere Pro CS6? Premiere Pro CS6 is blazing fast IMHO.
It still has the classic NLE workflow, timeline, nomenclature, etc (which I'm a huge fan of) so for someone that has only used Vegas it may be a bit 'clunky'. But, for us old school NLE dudes... it's self-explanatory and business as usual.
If they have taken down their activation servers how will they know if someone is authorized to use it? Isn't that the point?
Oh well, I downloaded and started up Photoshop for a few minutes but will likely never use it except maybe to do a file convert or something. I'm too stuck using Corel.
"Erm, anybody care to comment on the legality of this free-ness?
"Free Creative Suite downloads? Not so fast, says Adobe"
blah blah blah. I'm in IT and it would take me all of 75 seconds TOPS to stop that website if I worked for them and they wanted it down. Now, they are just milking it for free global publicity. ANY press is good press, even better if it is FREE press.
Just checked the download site again and it is STILL up. Either their ONE IT guy is away on vacation (in which case we always have easy remote access - especially in a largely online company) or they their numbers are showing their upsales have increased.
Get it while THEY are giving it out and don't worry about it. It is old clunky junk anyway compared to the new versions.
Yes, I tried the one they listed free Premier Pro 2.0 - I know it is fine and has always been the rage, but to a newb like me, it was too slow, too klunky, too unintuitive and after I trialed them all, Vegas won. For me.

I appears from everything that I have read that the "party line from Adobe" is that these are not free. You must already own a copy of CS2 in order to legally download and use these. Adobe is doing nothing to enforce this other than a legal statement but I think it's a nice gesture to CS2 users since Adobe turned off the activation servers.
What you do is your business. I own CS4, CS5, CS5.5, & CS6 for both Mac and PC so I have little use for CS2. Also these do not install on current Mac OS X Lion or Mountain Lion because they are written for PowerPC and require Rosetta which is no longer shipped with OS X so they are only useful to PC users or OS X Snow Leopard or earlier Mac users.

Gazie,
My post above has the official statement that Adobe has posted in various places on their forums. The quote in the article you linked is from an Employee of Adobe, but is only in his postings, not in the Official Adobe postings.
OMG... did you really just say CS2 is way too slow & klunky? I would agree that; as of my writing this, most would agree. That's why in 2013 we are using CS6 w/modern hardware. It's not realistic or relative to form or insinuate an opinion on CS6 based on your CS2 experience.
For me as a Source/Monitor editor, I find Premiere CS6 to not only be fast and responsive but also stable & trustworthy on both my Mac & PC. The Adobe Suite is a true Suite; NOT a Bundle... of course, many only need Vegas. If the latter is you, then you've found your tool.
