After Vegas 11, Vegas is dead, dead, dead...

Since Sony abolished the public betas, I'm used to there being some show stopping issues with new versions of their software. But this is a bit much: after installing Vegas 11, both Vegas 10 AND 11 can't even start up anymore: within a few seconds I just get a "Vegas pro has stopped working" notification. I tried installing the latest build 511, but that didn't change anything. BTW, I'm using 64-bit versions in W7-64.

Fortunately, I use Vegas for very occasional video editing and for burning blu-ray one-offs for testing, so it's not my bread and butter. But I have to say that I've never seen it as bad as this. A new installation should never kill an old one: that should be a golden rule. I hope Sony can climb back on this horse ASAP.

I've read that some have resorted to re-installing 10. If I need it before another solution presents, that's what I'll do too.

In fairness to Sony, V11 is a major departure from earlier versions in that uses the GPU extensively and is entirely at the mercy of your graphics card drivers. Not only does V11 use the GPU extensively, but it uses features in the GPU drivers that have only recently been added and are still being tweaked in the most recent betas for these drivers.

If you want V11 to work stablely, you have two options:

1/ Update your graphics card (or at least the drivers).
2/ Turn GPU acceleration off.

Returning to public betas is a good idea.

I must be having a memory lapse. When did Sony Creative Software have public betas?

Yeah, I have used it since Sonic Foundry version 1 and I don't remember any Public Betas.

Well you know I have done a lot of pondering about V11 and have some questions:
Did Sony have a downsizing letting programmers play out their options to reduce the salary cap and let the great ones get away? Who is quarterbacking the software improvements? I really hope they didn't go to a "West Coast Offense" (FCP) as they are temprorarily 0 and 3 with V11, the receivers dropping balls and the running backs fumbling. I am a diehard fan however and tend ot overlook all of the temporal anomolies. I have managed to jerk my present project back and forth between V10 and V11 with a minimum of anomolies---turn off UAC in Vista, crash on exit, Cineform files 4 x 3 instead of 16 x 9, pan/crop rotating instead of zooming, default pan/crop zoom markers going from smooth to linear, cookie cutter anomolies, sound volume levels and FX/pan crop settings not transfered on copy/paste veg files, and my favorite "render to preview? being eliminated. I haven't tried to render or add FX's yet. The auto preview in the media folder is acting kind of funky (delays) when I transfer a jpg to the timeline and the preview is very fuzzy.
They need an Electronic test program to test the software as all electronic component manufacturers do in house. You would need Edward Mitten to figure out a program however.

That's it, after I don't know how many crashes in a row, I'm back on V10. V11 is simply just an early beta version at this stage, not an actual workable releasable product. I just have too much work right now to be messing with this sort of silliness.

Sonic Foundry Vegas 4 public beta.

That takes me back, Version 4 of Vegas from Sonic Foundry was exactly when I jumped into the Vegas fold. What a great build v4 was and I don't think I'm gooey eyed in my reminiscence. Oh for that stability now.

FWIW, I just edited a multi-cam 2-hour shoot, with three sound tracks, using Vegas 8.0c. I completed the entire project in about six hours. The video was a mix of HDV from my FX1 and AVCHD from my brand new CX-700.

Not one glitch or crash.

Also, during the past week, I have been editing 72 reels of 8mm film, which total thirteen hours. All 72 reels are on the timeline at once. I have been editing, color grading, and putting several thousand events into groups on dozens of timelines.

I'm doing this in Vegas 7.0d.

Not one crash or problem.

I do have 10.0e, but the only time I use it is when I need to stretch audio. Elastique is a real gem. While the titling and performance features in 10 & 11 are tempting, I won't trade productivity for anything.

Also, none of these releases did anything to improve rendering quality. The free MeGUI can produce far better MP4 output than either of the rather lame codecs included in Vegas.

I really hope Sony can figure out how to get their new stuff working. I definitely would be interested in upgrading, but am very happy that I didn't.

Like john, i'm editing multicam, unlike John, i'm in 11, with fewer crashes than 10. Go figure. Vegas 11 64 bit.8 gbs am.

Apart from Elastique, another biggie for me in 10.0e over 8.0c is that it has much better support for AVC files. i.e. Smoother playback, and support for more exotic flavours. e.g. You can download an mp4 file from YouTube and it plays nice in 10, but not at all in 8. The pan/crop/FX chain re-ordering is also very nice. The black clips bug might eventually push me right back to 8.0c for routine work though.

Didn't know about the Vegas mp4 rendering issues. What is the MeGUI product you refer to? Couldn't see it when searching google.
Thanks

I doubt we'll ever see an open source GPL library such as x264 in Vegas. It would be nice if we could sneek ffmpeg in through the back door, though . . .

I don't know. Upgraded to 11, installed on a new laptop and it runs fine, no problems whatsoever. Had not had any problems with any of version 10s or 8 ( skipped 9, but judging by historical performance I'm guessing it would have worked just fine ).

Seriously I don't know what to tell you. In the past 8-9 years I've gone through almost all versions of Vegas running on at least a dozen machines and I've never had any problems with any of them. Maybe some research before you buy a PC?

a couple of weeks ago I had a chance to get premiere and aftereffects for $300 and I passed. $300 is nothing for those two programs, but I have Vegas and have Fusion, and I'd probably end up never using premiere and aftereffects anyway, so...

What makes V11 crash like crazy for me is working with any sort of generated media: titles, solid backgrounds, alpha layers etc. This is either with or without the GPU acceleration enabled.
winrockpost wrote on 12/21/2011, 5:49 PM
Well I have not bought 11, found a bug within 10 minutes of installing the trial, but not sure vegas is dead... but the stability of each first couple of builds of a new release has been a garbage since sony bought sonic foundry, nothing new here....what concerns me is they will eventually get a release working pretty well but still have a couple of serious bugs and then release a new version....10 still has the replace media issue... but has not bit me in a while.but then again I only use it when I use ex1 stuff, everything else i edit in 8 if I use vegas at all, . I don't know where sony is going with vegas but I wish they would have a wider base for beta testing... if they really give a shit about releasing a more stable product

edit // cool they can automatically edit out my shit.. well how about putting that effort into your product
