Are Secondary YouTube Channels Necessary?

I've noticed that a lot of people have a secondary channel for their weaker videos, deleted scenes, behind the scenes etc...

I was considering making a secondary channel, but I see some disadvantages to this. For one thing, you're fragmentizing and losing a lot of your audience this way. I guess most people don't care, since these uploads aren't as relevant... but it almost seems pointless. Most fans don't even seem to know about the existence of an extra channel.

I've made several videos, and I'm having trouble simply deciding which video should go on my main channel, and which should go on my secondary channel. There's those videos that are obviously qualified for the main channel. There's the ones that are pretty weak, and should go on a secondary/extras channel. Then there's ones that are just so-so, and those are the ones I can't decide on.

I've watched peoples secondary channels before, and some of the stuff they have on there is actually BETTER or funnier than what's on their main channel... and I'd think that it was a shame, because these superior secondary channel videos would end up getting a fraction of the audience of some of these crappy ones that are on their main channel.

A lot of people (including big channels) don't seem to take YouTube all that seriously. YouTube seems to have a "quantity over quality" kinda vibe to it. I don't like that. Some people just keep it simple, and keep everything on one channel... but I don't wanna clutter up my channel with a bunch of mediocre/poor crap. I want all my uploads to hold up to a certain level of quality. I want each upload to pack a wallop.

One thing I considered doing was corralling my videos into an anthology/sketch style series (I do comedy). I figured you could take a group of videos that would be so-so by themselves, but together could make for an entertaining and solid upload... there would be stuff that would get lost in the mix, but I could have these anthology episodes on my main channel, and feature the individualized segments on my secondary channel... but with this concept, I'm still left with a little bit of the same dilemma, which is, what is worthy of it's own stand-alone upload, and what should be thrown into this anthology series? I'm just really bad at making up my mind lol.

I guess that ultimately the answer to all of this is, "It's up to you.." but I was just curious to read feedback, advice or experiences from other people.

I think if you have a completely different type of content, then it's worth making a 2nd channel. One danger if you don't, is that subscribers might unsubscribe when they're notified of content they're not interested in. It's also more difficult to manage multiple channels.

Don't forget you can categorize things to an extent within one channel with playlists.

This and this might help.
