At Last! Live event length readout

NickHope wrote on 2/13/2008, 11:44 PM
Something I've been requesting for years is finally a reality thanks to a new custom command from Rosebud (Gilles).

Now the length of an event can be viewed live while it is edited on the timeline. I place the little window just under my preview window and above the timeline, and I've made it as small as possible. Gilles has made it so it remembers its size and position.

Download CC_ShowEventLength.zip from his scripts page. On my system I put the dll and png files in < My Documents/Vegas Application Extensions > and then it appears on the View > Extensions menu in Vegas. It can of course be put up on the toolbar using Options > Customize Toolbar.

Was previously discussed, including my clumsy workaround, on the scripting forum.

I can see this working for single track, but how does it/would it recognise an underlying Event showing through a GAP in the upper track?

Best thing for me to do is to d/l and then comment? But that is my initial thought and I bet others could be having the same? AND YES!!! Great script!!

.. . d/ling now . . .

It just reads out the length of whatever event you have selected regardless of what track it is on. If I remember rightly Premiere Pro has an enormous readout of this (I vaguely remember by default towards the top left of the screen?). Rosebud's window is basically showing the info that you can see in the Edit Details > Selected Events > Length window, but in a much smaller window.

Personally this is a godsend for me because when I'm cutting up a typical dive souvenir video I dump my uncut clips onto a single track on the timeline and ripple edit my way through them. I like to use rough guidelines for event lengths. For example 3-4 seconds for a wide shot without special action. 4-6 seconds for a tight shot where more is going on. etc. etc.. And in general I just like to know how long my events are as I'm sizing them, which is difficult to see quickly on a zoomable timeline. This little window now gives me instant feedback.

Yup! I see . .

Nice one Gilles, thank you.

Using Event Length:
* Any chance of a larger Font Size?

* How about a rightclick "Copy Event Length"? - Good for quickly/auto resizing similar Event lengths to the SAME length? Kinda like Copy Paste Atribs - but for Event lengths?

* Copy FROM/TO Main timeline "Selection Length"

:-) Gilles had it quite a lot larger but I badgered him into making it as small as it is so it can squeeze in that gap between the the preview window and the timeline without covering the critical parts of either.

New version available (with auto resize font ).

Maybe with a context menu.
I will have a look for that, but I can’t promise I will be able to do it.

Thank you Gilles! And thanks again for your: "I will have a look for that, but I can’t promise I will be able to do it."

Event Length font size - PERFECKTo! Gilles, thanks for your hard work on this.

Thx Grazie.
New version available (I managed to add the “Copy/Paste” feature).

Workflow:
-Select/Edit an Event.
-Right Click the "Show Event Length” window to open the context Menu and choose "Copy length of selected event"
-Select Events to adjust the length.
-Right Click the "Show Event Length” window to open the context Menu and choose "Adjust selected event lengths to..."

Yes, the auto font resize is great.

Thanks again Gilles. You're really coming up with some very useful scripts and custom commands.

O-M-G, Gilles!

In the space of about 40 minutes, from my request to you and to apply BACK here in London (wow!), I now have a method to creatively adjust a whole bunch of media to MATCH the rest!! DONE! Great for stills.

Wanna have a further idea? - Interested?

Actually : Create "Group" > Alt+"Squash" reduces stuff equally too.

I AM gonna use this script for quick and easy AT the work-face type of adjusts.

I am having trouble running this on my 64-bit W7 system. Should it work? Or is it only for 32-bit or XP-only systems?
"An error occurred during execution of the script...."

The file structure that you show in your install instructions appears to be for XP machines. Am I doing something wrong?

Maybe I'm missing something here, but what exactly does this little clip length readout do for you? Yes, I understand it shows a real-time view of clip length as you adjust it, but is that really what you're looking for?

I guess what I'm asking is this; is showing clip length, so you can make precise adjustments, more desirable than a tool that would simply set the clip length to the length you're trying to achieve? To me, that sounds like what your ultimate goal is.

Thanks Gilles and Nick!

This is just absolutely crucial to my editing technique (I ripple edit direct on the timeline, never in the trimmer). It's never as simple as just setting a clip to a desired length. It all depends on the action within the clip, wobbles, exposure/focus changes etc., the interaction of the clip with its neighbours, the feel of the piece. Sometimes I might ripple edit the start of a clip, sometimes the end, sometimes both, sometimes neither. But I usually have in my head some sort of guideline about how long most clips in the piece should be, and I need that feedback as accessible as it can possibly be so that I can make my decisions. For example in my current piece I'm doing roughly 4-6 second establishing shots, a little longer on most detail shots, and I know that any shot over say 10 seconds better be very interesting, and anything under 4 seconds might be jarring.

I spent my first couple of years editing in Premiere 6, which has a grid of 1-second units on the timeline background, so I guess I got used to always knowing how long the event is without even really thinking about it.

Thanks for the feedback on that Nick. I guess everyone has developed a set of idiosyncrasies in the way we do things. And whatever feels "right" for each of us, is the right way to do it. I asked about this because sometimes questions are posed in a way that describe an obstacle to a task, but not the ultimate goal the task hopes to achieve; which may be the better answer.

I'm with you on that one Gary: The WHAT or WHY (Form) rather than the HOW (Function).

Oh yes.

@Nick Hope

The link to ShowEventLength script seems to be dead.

I have used Sony Movie Studio 13 for some time. There you can see an event lenght easily in the corner at bottom right. I testing a demo of Vegas Pro 14 at the moment and there is not such feature in that program.

Am I missing some preference in Vegas Pro? Or is the script from Rosebud (Gilles) available somewhere else?

It's gone in MS14 as well.
