AV1 render fails w/ "The reason for the error could not be determined"

cyro wrote on 12/18/2024, 1:13 AM

Rendering footage created with a Panasonic Lumix GH5M2 I get this error in about half the attempted renders. Some videos render just fine, others error out after a few seconds with that unspecified error. This is reproducible on TWO different PCs, one W11 with RTX3080Ti one W10 with ARC A770.

Rendering in AVC, HEVC etc. works just fine, but AV1 errors out.

Interesting, haven't seen that. Are you working in 32-bit mode (I notice you have 10-bit footage so assume yes but which mode? ACES?)

Not a solution but for AV1 I'd only render through Voukoder as it can tap into hardware renderers that are pretty good! Voukoder classic is free.

Hi Roger, Yes and Yes.

And a big +1 on Voukoder, works fairly well, especially with the ARC A770 (when that machine isn't busy with recoding old footage). I do get the occasional audio synch issues when rendering in Voukoder, different problem though.

ACES support seems to be having issues during the rebuild of the video engine (strange interactions with the color grading panel, the default space not working right for me, etc.)

Odd that it's only failing with AV1 though (and that doesn't even use the GPU for encoding).

I just did a test render using the VP20 ad benchmark project in my signature and it completed though with artifacts.

I did a second render with a mixture of 8 and 10-bit footage to AV1. No glitches or failure. Could you share a sample project with footage that doesn't work? (simpler/shorter the better)

To confirm, are you rendering to AV1 or AVI ?

For peer support, especially this time of year, please provide all of the required information, including your render settings:

Definitely AV1:

Setting are the standard MAGIX AV1 settings for 3840x2160 29.97p 8 bit 4:2:0, unchanged:

Your settings look completely normal and there isn't much to set with AV1 anyway.

If you can provide more clues as to how to replicate it I'm happy to try (sample media, project, etc.)
In general I'd recommend avoiding AV1 in VEGAS for quality reasons. MagixHEVC doesn't have artifacts.
