AVCHD files with VP17 and Win 7

I am working with Sony Vegas Pro 17 (build 455) on a Windows 7 Professional (64 bit) operating system. Every time I try to open or import an AVCHD file in vegas, Sony Vegas stops working (Not responding) and I have to exit and restart Vegas. This is very frustrating as my Panasonic video cam shoots in AVCHD format, which is what I want to use. Yes, I can convert my AVCHD files to MP3 & 4 and they will work in Vegas but this defeats the purpose of wanting to use the higher quality avchd format.

Does anyone know how to resolve this issue so that I can start working with and editing my AVCHD files without Vegas freezing up? Greatly appreciate it.

If you want to continue using Win7 you could use the ImportAssist tool of HappyOtterScripts. Here's a quick demo using some mts 25i 5.1 footage that I had. Basically, it just copies the video stream so there's no loss of quality and re-renders the 5.1 AC3 to 5.1 wav which Vegas can easily import. It's works much as @Former user suggested.
