AVCHD files with VP17 and Win 7

JProductions wrote on 11/2/2021, 8:51 AM

I am working with Sony Vegas Pro 17 (build 455) on a Windows 7 Professional (64 bit) operating system. Every time I try to open or import an AVCHD file in vegas, Sony Vegas stops working (Not responding) and I have to exit and restart Vegas. This is very frustrating as my Panasonic video cam shoots in AVCHD format, which is what I want to use. Yes, I can convert my AVCHD files to MP3 & 4 and they will work in Vegas but this defeats the purpose of wanting to use the higher quality avchd format.

Does anyone know how to resolve this issue so that I can start working with and editing my AVCHD files without Vegas freezing up? Greatly appreciate it.

Vegas Pro 17 supports AVCHD natively. Vegas Pro 17 is not, and never was a product of Sony.

First, try resetting Vegas in case you changed the decoder.

If that doesn't help, start with the complete information requested here:

Resetting Vegas didn't resolve the issue, so I will try the next step mentioned above.

And yes, Vegas was a product used and published by Sony Creative Software...which was how I originally purchased it.

Just to confirm, were you able to follow all points of the resetting instructions exactly?

And if you don't have the last update of VEGAS Pro 17, please download it from here and install. Read also about the bug fix mentioned.

Edit: I see you do have the last build. Maybe try and contact VEGAS Support, advice here.

Note though also this comment re VP 17 and Windows 7 compatibility.

Yessir, was able to perform the reset exactly as required. However, I did see a message mentioning a possible compatibility issue with Windows 7. Maybe I will finally have to upgrade to Windows 10.

I would do that first, if only because Windows 7 has not been supported for a long time.

I have had problems with AVCHD .mts files in the past. You need to convert them to .m2ts files.

I've read that you can just change the extensions manually but I just imported the files from the camera into Play Memories (free) and the resultant files were good to go.

Espadon, I downloaded and installed PlayMemories onto my computer. I hooked up my video recorder to my computer via USB as the program suggests. However...PlayMemories does not see or find any of the media files (AVCHD) that I just recorded. I get a very frustrating error message from PlayMemories that says....

"Videos that cannot be imported by Play Memories Home have been found. To import and play all the found media files, your camera must be recognized by PlayMemories Home. Connect the camera to this computer using a USB cable, and restart PlayMemories Home."

Welp, I've done this several times. My computer recognizes and sees my video camera just fine. PlayMemories just isn't accessing or recognizing the media card/files on my camera. Ugghhhh!!!

JProductions wrote on 11/2/2021, 4:51 PM

PlayMemories can only be used by a Sony video recorder apparently.

Have you tried converting your files from mts to m2ts? There are other programs that will do this. Just Google "mts to m2ts".

Try this to begin with, Using free shutter encoder extract the components, add video and audio separately , do they both cause Vegas to crash?

If it is the video that's the problem, clear shutter encoder, bring in the video only file and rewrap to mp4, so you'll then have a mp4 video without sound and your extracted ac3 MTS audio that you can marry together in the editor

It would also be possible to rewrap your original file but that throws up other potential problems.

It still seems unusual this is happening, so I do hope you carried out the reset properly

Yes, I've tried converting from Mts to M2ts using two different programs. However, in doing so, I found that the converted file (M2ts) ends up being less resolution as compared to the original Mts file. My goal is to work with the AVCHD quality file. Still no luck in being able to import the mts file into vegas without it immediately crashing. Very frustrating. I do not want to convert the mts file to mp4 because I lose the resolution quality.

I appreciate everyone's help & suggestions on this as nothing seems to work.

Could you upload a short test clip that could be downloaded for test? I still have a Win7 machine. I've never had a problem with mts from a Panasonic being imported or m2ts files from Sony.

Here's a screengrab from an FZ200. Only difference is stereo vs 6 channel audio which may be the issue. It's also interlaced like your file.

Okay, so maybe the issue really is with running Windows 7. I will eventually get a Windows 10 machine and try again. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions. I really appreciate your time.

Did you follow my instruction?

rewraping to mp4 doesn't alter quality, it's not re-encoding, you may still have a problem with the mts audio, but you may be able to rewrap that too, or re-enocde the audio only, which isn't that big of a deal, I did not try

Dexcon wrote on 11/3/2021, 6:11 AM

I will eventually get a Windows 10 machine and try again.

Windows 11 has now been released, and newly released computers are going to increasingly ship with W11 rather than W10, so you might want to get a new W10 computer sooner rather than later while they are still available - and Vegas Pro 17 is compatible with W10. The reason that this may (might) be important is that early comments on the forum show that some don't have problems with Vegas Pro 19, the current version, on W11 but others do. It's still too early to tell though. While it would be expected that Vegas Pro 19 will eventually become W11 compatible (it currently doesn't officially support W11), if there are compatibility problems with Vegas Pro 17 with W11, there is unlikely to be an update to Vegas Pro versions earlier than 19 to meet W11 compatibility issues IF there are issues.

AC-3 compatibility with Windows 7 and VEGAS 17 is likely to be problematic. It is one of the reasons that Windows 10 is a requirement for VEGAS Pro 17.
