Beware XP and Firefox update 27.0.1 and MS .NET

bill-kranz wrote on 3/10/2014, 4:24 AM
Recently on March 9th I updated Firefox to 27.0.1 and now my Sony Vegas Pro 8.0c will not launch. I get the error about the "Error message for MSVCR71.dll in sony vegas pro 8.0 will not open..."
This latest build of Firefox no longer supports MS.NET Framework Assistant 1.2.1 and I suspect this to be the culprit. (It says this in my add-ons manager view...)
Did not setup a restore point before I did this and now am looking into if I can rollback to a earlier version of Firefox.
Am unsure about re-installing Sony 8.0 and how that will affect my projects therein.
Any advice on that part?
I tried a search on the term "MSVCR71.dll" on this forum and could find nothing.
It sounds complicated trying to add back this .dll.

So be careful out there you folks on the older OS's...

Thanks,
Bill

Something else must be going on. I just noticed I was on 27.0.1 and my 8.0C opens fine. I'm on Win7 64bit, though.

Most likely something else. FF just installs FF, you need to manually install other things it supports.

But, over the past year+ I've started to loathe firefox. At first I couldn't open a new tab with the new tab shortcut key when flash was being used in the current tab. Then it started using LARGE amounts of CPU & RAM where the previous versions didn't. To the point it slows my whole machine down. Even a drive wipe & new XP install did the same, and a drive wipe & Win 8.1 install did the same. I use a lot of tabs but not more then three years ago when I didn't have this issue.

What hot deals panel? Non here. Also on 27.0.1 and all is good.

Where did you download your copy of FF? I only ever get it from the official mozilla site and never from the first google entry listed, because its full of crapware.

get it here:

Paul.

So happy i stuck with SeaMonkey. It's the direct descendent of the original Netscape Navigator/Communicator and avoids a lot of the ugly fluff in Firefox / Thunderbird.
TheHappyFriar wrote on 3/10/2014, 11:01 AM
FF didn't use to have fluff. That's why I liked it.

I've been p*ssed at Firefox since they introduced v. 15.

Does anybody actually use Firefox anymore? I thought it was less popular than IE6.
Chienworks wrote on 3/10/2014, 6:07 PM
Almost everyone i know uses either Firefox or Chrome. I know almost no one who uses MSIE. The statistic i remember from 2012 showed Firefox at about 53% while MSIE was about 18%.

You may be correct that Firefox *WAS* less popular than IE6, but that was probably 10 years ago before Firefox was known at all. IE6 is pretty much completely dead now and has been for quite some time. I ran into someone last week who had done a fresh XP install and that came with IE6, but we upgraded it to IE8 right away because 6 didn't work with their health insurance website. I didn't go to 10 because the hardware was too old.

Dont really get the negativity with FF here. Using it every day on multiple PC machines, laptops and even use it on a mac. It runs flawlessly and has done for years! Using the current version and there's no ads, popups or slowness or nothing. Guys, are you getting it from the right source, as i mentioned? Really odd. Seriously, no problems here.

Paul.

+1 paul_w
Been using it for years. No worries here with 27.0.1. Not even on Android.

I gave up on Firefox a while ago and switched to Pale Moon 64 bit.

Been using FF since the early days, upgraded only when it became absolutely necessary. Currently on 14.0.1, everything runs great, no bloatware or glitches. The older versions are easily available and the installation is trivial.

From what I've read FF has lost ground to IE and Chrome, but still a major player.

Like Kit, I went to Pale Moon long ago, also 64 bit.
It is based on Firefox to run on win platforms only.

Guys, are you getting it from the right source, as i mentioned?

Getting it from that upgrade popup they have that pops up every couple weeks now. So I don't even go to the Mozilla/FF site.

Hi- Thanks for this information...

I got mine from the FF update info message box.
As I said I am suspicious of the fact it said the .NET add-on assistant was no longer supported on XP.
Since in April? MS will be dropping support for XP maybe FF is also dropping support for the various add-ons.

The Ad Panel was only popping in from the right and only on the forum page
that is why I thought Sony was doing this but now it sounds like Adware.

I do not think I will do the reinstall process as this XP is going to die soon and I have most of my transferring done already.

Thanks again,
Bill

I used Win2k long after it's life "ended". The world didn't end, hackers didn't use my computer to promote kiddie porn, and nothing stopped working.

So, if you like XP, then don't worry. I only left 2K when ATI stopped supporting it and other companies were supporting it long after ATI stopped.

No Hot Deals ad panel here or other issues w/ FF(v27), perhaps a 'hidden' app sneaked in along with another install. (all to common these days)
The pop-up blocker add-on(s) however should be installed.

Friar:

I am having to re-use the XP box to be updated with lots of new parts to a Win 8.0 box so that I can do 3D gaming with my ASUS 3D capable monitor.

I have been very happy with XP and actually have it on a even older machine machine that I will donate to a friend.

Running FF 27.0.1 here on my old Dell Precision M6300 with Windows XP 32-bit. Vegas Pro 8.0c still runs. But I do have an issue when I scroll my facebook feed. The fan very quickly kicks in and then the whole browser starts to grind to a halt. I originally suspected dirt as I didn't notice it was facebook-specific, and tried (unsuccessfully) to access the innards to do a cleanup. But now I think it's software-related. I have twice in the past switched seriously to Chrome, but certain unresolved annoyances brought me back to Firefox both times.
