Black preview and hang

My most recent frustration with Vegas Pro with Quicktime DNxHD files is that VP will show a black preview screen and then hang once I have too many (~50) files on the timeline.

Anyone encounter this or find a workaround?

Here's what I've tried:
- Happens in both VP11 and VP12
- Happens with two flavors of DNxHD files (8-bit and 10-bit)
- Happens with DNxHD files with or without audio
- Increasing Preview RAM doesn't seem to help
- GPU on/off doesn't matter
- Windows compatibility mode doesn't matter

I'm not trying anything fancy here. Just trying to edit a straight project. No fx's have been applied to get the problem.

I'm nearing the end of my patience with Vegas Pro. I love its UI, but a UI requires it to be useable.

When it hangs, there is one core hard at work. I've let it go for an hour and it never stopped.

Would the version of Quicktime I'm using matter? If so, what version is recommended?

There was a recent posting in another thread by a user who said all his issues had been solved by running in Win7 compat mode and selecting "disable desktop composition." I gave it a try for grins, and found that after disabling desktop composition all my footage would go to black after a few seconds of preview, and this continued even after unchecking the option, until I rebooted.

When experimenting with compatibility modes, you didn't by any chance select that option, did you?

Running V 11 & 12 with no compatibility mode, just plain as installed, and DNxHD has been working fine except for the instance above. Using QT Pro 7.5.5 (Jeez, didn't realize I was using such an old version, but working fine)
