Boris FX Primatte Studio

JRey wrote on 2/22/2022, 4:58 AM

Is there a definitive answer to this Primatte Studio question. I am considering the flash upgrade offer not 365 so:

Is this plugin better than the new blue chromakey plugin?

Is the Boris plugin the full version or time limited?

My machine is not compatible for a Win 11 upgrade, might give you an idea of how old it is, about 6 years. Will the upgrade work well on my machine.

Thanks in advance for your time and experience.

Is this plugin better than the new blue chromakey plugin?

Based on discussions over the years on the forum, both NBFX's and BorisFX's chromakeys are well regarded - it may turn out to be personal preference based on your own chromakey projects. BorisFX offer a trial of Primatte Studio - https://borisfx.com/products/continuum-filters/primatte-studio/?collection=continuum-premium-filters&product=continuum-filter-primatte-studio so that will help you to form your own conclusion.

Is the Boris plugin the full version or time limited?

There's been nothing mentioned on the forum as far as I can recall to suggest that this will be an LE/SE/cut-down version. But as is the case with some "bonus" extras, it might be licence-locked to the version of Vegas Pro it shipped with. It's sometimes hit-or-miss if this is the case and only comes to light when the next version of Vegas Pro is released.

Also, if you decide to get more BorisFX Continuum FX, they must be from the same version as any existing Continuum VFX you already have installed - if not it's either one or the other but not both. For example, a 2021.5 Continuum FX does not co-exist with another Continuum FX from the 2022 version.

My machine is not compatible for a Win 11 upgrade, might give you an idea of how old it is, about 6 years. Will the upgrade work well on my machine

Please be aware of the recommended minimum specifications for Vegas Pro 19 at:

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/specifications/#productMenu

Older specs may not enable Vegas Pro 19's three AI VFX to work. In addition, overall performance may possibly be sluggish. Also, make sure your computer's GPU meets the minimum specs for Continuum VFX as per:

https://borisfx.com/support/supported-graphics-cards/

Hi Dexcon

Most helpful. Seems my graphics card is good and the machine specs are enough i7 and 3.4. Would you know if these are the minimum requirements?

I currently have Pro 18, if I upgrade dos this mean that the Boris plugins I currently have will no longer work however the Boris chromakey should?

Thank you

Yes, as mentioned in my comments, both are minimum specs.

The best way to find out is to install the trial version of Vegas Pro 19 and see if the older BorisFX work in VP19. You probably won't get BorisFX Ultimatte in VP 19's trial version, but there's just too many comments on the forum over the years (and on BorisFX's forum confirmed by BorisFX staff) that all installed Continuum FX must be from the same version. Maybe contact BorisFX and see if you can get a good deal on upgrading to the Continuum Complete Suite so that there will be no incompatibility.

@JRey Hi, Vegas pro Trial is right underneath the purchasing options at the bottom https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/gb/vegas-pro/

Boris Primatte Studio Trial is on the header https://borisfx.com/products/continuum-filters/primatte-studio/?collection=continuum-premium-filters&product=continuum-filter-primatte-studio

A lot/all of the plugins i own haven't shown in the trial versions of other programs i've tried & you won't get Primatte Studio with the V19 trial.

I watched a Vegas specific tutorial about primatte and was pretty impressed.
However, my real life expreience was rather far off what i saw in that video. I found the keyer overly complex and counterintuitive, some functions remained greyed out, and it did absolutely not work as smooth and right away as shown in the video. It was a perfectly lit green screen scene in a big studio, but the keying produced weird artefacts. I sent a snippet to Boris, who were really cool and helpful, trying to key out the scene as well, but could not explain the difficulty.
I ended up using the Ignite and the NB ones, partly even together in serie to get as good a key as possible.

I have just had an hour with the trail version of Vegas 19 and I am impressed, very impressed. I have been using Vegas for years, a lot of years and have never seen a version run as smooth. In the past I have had spent days getting the right video driver and adjusting various parameters to get Vegas to run. I have a lot of New Blue plugins that have all crashed at some point, even with GPU turned off.

The trail even on best preview setting just worked. Using NB green screen worked well.and preview is fast, a lot faster than Vegas Pro 18. I will spend sometime using different plugins tomorrow and see how long it takes me to break it ;)

Like Mindmatter I have also been impressed with the primatte video so his experience is a bit disappointing. Can I ask if you received a full version of primatte that was not time limited with Vegas Pro 19?

I will report back tomorrow and thank you all for your input.

@JRey every BorisFX plugin I've gotten in the past have been perpetual and not time limited. But I would ask Boris to be sure.

If you get Primatte, as @Dexcon has posted, the version numbers of your "older" BorisFX plugins have to be the same. Otherwise, installing Primatte, if it is a newer version, will overwrite your old Boris plugins causing them to "disappear".

I upgraded a couple of years ago to Continuum Complete so I don't have to worry about incompatibility issues, and I got a whole lot of other plugins. A whole lot. You might want to contact Boris sales and see what they can offer you.

If you are going to get the full Continuum suite contacting borisfx is a good idea. According to their FAQs they have a special offer for Vegas users ($395)

Thanks Reyfox and Misohoza

For the information however I might not be upgrading. When I first downloaded the trail version of Pro 19 it worked flawlessly for the first hour of use, fast and stable. I turned off the computer and came back to do some more testing the next day and broke it within ten minutes.

I was using the .veg files from previous projects and some new ones starting from scratch and what seemed to make it fall over were the NB plugins especially chromakey pro and neat video. Tried all plugins on the clip and also the track, fell over both times. I know this makes little sense but those are the facts.

Rendering was faster but throw NB plugins at it and its unstable with or without GPU . Tried the same .veg files in Pro 18, it does fall over but I am used to that. Is it worth me upgrading? For me probably not. I have been a loyal user of Vegas for well over ten years mainly as its PC based and am used to these problems but by now I would have hoped that they might have been sorted out.

A friend of mine, who is a complete amateur, was showing off his new Mac the other day and the results of iMovie when it came to green screen were excellent.

Is it time for a change I wonder?

Thank for your help.

@JRey the developers are still working on Vegas 19, so this isn't the end of what they are doing.

I don't have NeatVideo, but what specific NBFX plugins are you using that are problematic?

As for Mac, how much is it going to cost you, and is it worth it? Only you can answer that.

See my computer specs in my signature... I have NBFX TotalFX, which is everything they have. So far, on my computer, outside of Titler Pro 7, everything has been working, and quite well.

It would be nice if you gave your complete computer specs....what file types are you working on, what chroma keying are you doing..... you are willing to buy a NEW Mac, yet unwilling to upgrade your 6 year old computer which might be the cause of your frustration?

@Reyfox thanks for the reply.

1 Every year at some point I upgrade in the belief that thins will be better, alas not yet.

2 Most of the plugins cause me issues normally when they are chained. Color correcter Pro, Chromakey Pro and sharpen is a good combo for problems. I have all of the NB plugins form the Essentials range, which have not been updated in years as NB never released any.

3 As for the Mac despite the fact that its a joy to behold I won't be upgrading for a number of reasons. The cost, the fact that its even more restrictive when it comes to upgrading, I live in hope that Vegas will sort itself out..

4 Its possible that it could be my computer but bear in mind I have had this computer for six years and its had a few versions of Vegas and always with issues.

My specs Intel i7 3.4 Ghz 16GB of ram high speed hard drives and two SSD's. Graphics is GTX970 with 4 mb memory. I also used good quality chips for the RAM. I have considered adding more RAM but I don't think thats the issue. I do run Kaspersky on the machine and keep meaning to disable it when editing which I will do this weekend and see if it makes a difference.

NewBlue has ColorFast 2. That's the NewBlue tool you'd use for color correcting but there are several other more specialized color correcting tools in the NewBlue product list - none named "Color Corrector Pro". There is a base "Color Corrector" and "Color Corrector Secondary" built into VEGAS.

@Gid WOW that's a lot of memory! On the subject of which my board will take up to 32gb given the issues I have do you think that adding the other 16 would be worth it? I have never been certain about what to upgrade that might solve my issues apart from starting out with a new computer. However I do less video work these days so can't really justify it.

@JRey ... the Intel i7-4770 was released nearly 9 years ago and it was the CPU on my then main use 2014 Dell desktop computer along with 32GB RAM. With Vegas Pro 18 it was okay with HD but struggled with 4K especially if VFX were added. If you are primarily using HD (1920 x 1080) then 16GB RAM is the recommended minimum - it's 32GB RAM for 4K, but if you do upgrade to 32GB, please don't expect a free flowing timeline experience.

Another thing that I found with the i7-4770 - its too old to use the two AI VFX in Vegas Pro 18 (three AI VFX in Vegas Pro 19) which are called the Deep Learnings Models. If installed, they'll show up in the Video FX window but simply do not work with an i7-4770 (in my experience).

If you intend updating to next versions of Vegas Pro, it may be necessary to consider a new PC. Please keep in mind that with future versions of Vegas Pro, the recommended minimum specifications are more likely than not to increase.

Thats interesting and good information especially as you had a similar experience with the CPU. As I am not doing 4K I am probably as good as it gets with my current kit and I take your point about future upgrades. I will stay with my save often approach :) 👍

Thank you for helping with some very useful information
