I'm sure with re-alignment of the consumer division, the camera 5.1 issue will be fixed in "movie studio" first, where the volume of retail sales is. Hopefully, it will be added to 'PRO' to easy movement from "studio". But integration of Soundforge, etc must be addressed with the changes to the trimmer for a smooth workflow. Like DSE and Farss stated few if any commercial camera work includes 5.1, but the new market of instant "news" reporting may change that, good or bad.

"Therefore I do think that the fact the trimmer only works in stereo is a limitation. As increasingly camcorders will have 5.1 on them - even though this will never be as good as professional recording, I realise - I do hope that this is something that can be resolved in the future."

Yup!

You'll never find main profile avchd in a pro cam either. It's purely a consumer level format.... but Vegas now supports it.

I think this pro/consumer cam talk is a pile of rubbish in the first place. Sony has CLEARLY decided to market Vegas to the home user AS WELL as to the pro. This can easily be seen by examples of B&H Photo deals where Vegas is selling for under $150 without DVDa.... FULL import support of MTS and M2TS with 5.1 sound... the export of avchd at main profile levels... the ability to make avchd disks....etc

Vegas IS aimed at the consumer just as much as it is aimed at the pro, and this being the case, I would suggest that DSE is wrong and the trimmer SHOULD (and will at some point I would guess) support 5.1 sound. The rest of Vegas does... there is no sense, or reason not to bring the trimmer in line to match. In fact I personally believe it's a little silly to suggest NOT bringing the trimmer in line to match the rest of Vegas.

Not complaining because I don't use the trimmer really - I do all my editting on the timeline - however

The 5.1 on the SR11 does provide some very impressive surround imaging - based on my personal experience.

AVCHD is a pretty nice format if you ask me - the image quality is very nice - better when rendered to 1440 x 1080 than MPEG2 at 40mbps in 1920x1080 with less compression artifacts from Vegas and 20-25% smaller files

There's plenty of consumers that use Vegas Pro - me included - I bought it because I wanted the flexibility it provided over the lesser versions and for DVDA.

As formats evolve, 5.1 is increasingly becoming the industry standard for videos and will continue on that path so improved support in the trimmer would seem appropriate to me - eventhough I don't use it.

There are many more important features needed in Vegas for me though, I would put this much lower on the priority list for my personal use. Not that it wouldn't be nice - it's just not important to me relatively speaking

Yes... I can live without it too... it's certainly not a killer deal. I'll just have to adjust the workflow and start trimming directly on the time line (some advantages will be lost though). The question is why should I have to, and.... I can't speak for SCS but I don't think this what they intended either. Probably a situation that was merely overlooked when they rigged Vegas for MTS/AVCHD and 5.1 import.
