Can I trial V18 to see if it works without buying or overwriting 17?

Hey folks,

Just as the title. I upgraded from 12 to 17 last March and waited when 18 came out ... because reasons.

Now its been around for a while I was wondering if I can download a trial and run it beside my existing, stable 17 edition to see how it goes, how it works with hardware and my files or if it will cause damage to the system or even if there is a way to install a trial version and then upgrade my license if I like it and want to move forward.

Thanks :)

Rikki

Yes, you can. I have 15-18 working side by side here. If you like 18 you an buy a license, if not you can uninstall the trial and keep 17.

Yess and yess, they can run besides each other and nothing of a former version will be overwritten.
If you buy it after the trial period you only have to put in your new registration number.

That is great news thank you both. A short follow up would be, I have 17 Pro just now and looking at the upgrade to 18 Pro over 18 Edit seems to be the audio editor Sound Forge but I use Audacity and other tools already so upgrading / downgrading from 17 Pro to 18 Edit would be fine and not remove any core functionality?

Thanks again :)

Edit and Pro are the same Vegas Programs, only Pro had in early times DVDArchitect as extra and now Soundforge, so if you don't need that you'll be cheaper with the Edit version.

Just beware of saving an imported Vpro17 project with the trial of Vpro18. It will make your Vpro17 project unable to open it again in Vpro17. You will be forced to buy Vpro18 to be able to re-edit your Vpro17 project after the trial period.

Yes, make a copy of the project before saving over it in VP 18.

18 Edit seems to be the audio editor Sound Forge but I use Audacity

The Vegas Pro application is the same regardless of the 'versions' ('Edit', 'Suite' or other) which are what is included. See comparison page

From an pro audio standpoint, I would prefer the Vegas Pro's audio DAW section over Audacity any day. Both of which are multi-track application. Reaper is also preferred over Audacity..Reaper is low cost, but not free. Sound Forge Pro on the other hand, is a multi-channel (surgical) editing/mastering application. I could not work without Sound Forge which integrates nicely with VP.

@rraud

Can you give me a link where the difference between "multi-track" and "multi-channel" is explained exactly?
I do not really understand what's the advantages and disadvantages.

Maybe it is insignificant for me anyway, because I only do Voice Over for my films, (in Sound Forge Pro), a music track in Vegas Pro, and only if the original sound of the video is terrible to correct in Soundforge Pro.
