Can't capture from Canon HV20

That doesn't make any sense though... I have no problems with the HV20, so it can't be the chips within. Maybe a combination of chips in the cam and the pci card??

It does make sense, when you discover some of the underlying conflict. The Fujitsu controller apparently cannot arbirtrate bus control when plugged into a Firewire card supporting other Firewire devices. In my case, I had another Firewire device plugged into the same PCI card, and the presence of 2 devices causes Vegas to hang rather than capture. HDVSplit and Ulead capture software handled it just fine but Vegas cannot. In my case, since I want to leave the other Frewire device connected to my machine and not pull out the other device's plug every time I plug in the HV20, the only remaining solution was to add a 2nd $15 PCI Firecard strictly for the HV20. Now Sony Vegas works as it should........ From what Sony support initially told me, this problem is also true both JVC and Canon camcorders.

FWIW Larry - I just got Vegas 7 (from ver. 5) I'm able to capture video from my HV20 into Vegas no problem on my laptop (haven't tried my desktop yet) via the laptop's built-in firewire port. If it's helpful to you, I can try to ascertain the chipset if you can guide me on how to do that.

On the 24p thing, as was mentioned, there currently isn't any pulldown removal available in Vegas on HV20 24p files. But on the first little project I did so far, editing 60i seemed to work OK. However one (big to me) advantage on removing pulldown is there are 20% less frames to render (so renders are faster) and 20% more room on a DVD. The real reason I shoot 24p is the look, but these are added benefits.

24 Peter,

Thanks for your kind offer to help. I eventually solved my capture problem, by adding a second dedicated Firewire card just for the HV20, leaving my original Firewire card connected to other Firewire devices. I now understand how to work around the software issue with Vegas 7.0d (and version 6 as well) but it took a lot of wasted time and effort to discover a work-around, The 2 Sony camcorders I previously owned and used did not hang Vehas during capture so I was surprised to learn that only some camcorders are supported with their capture software unless you either disconnect all other Firewire devices when capturing or (as I do) add another 2nd Firewire capture card dedicated to Vegas capture.

Thanks again,

Larry

As anyone tried editing 25p from a HV20? Are there the same issues with Vegas doing the pulldown as with 24p?

There is no "pulldown" in 25p. You can use a regular HDV template, and change the "field order" to "none/progressive" and you should have full success with HV20 25p.
