Can you add a mask to an empty event? Or on another video track?

I have a question...

I have several effects that I need to apply to individual events on my timeline (lut filters, sharpen, brightness, etc). But I would ALSO like to use a mask in the pan/crop effect that allows me to use a gaussian blur on certain parts of the frame on the same event. In other words, I'd like to use a mask for SOME effects, but not have it take effect on others.

I was thinking that if I added an "empty event" to another video track, and attempted to use the mask on that track that I would find success... but so far I haven't. The only other thing I can think of is to render a complete file with one set of effects, and then import that file into another project and do the remaining effects. But there has to be a better way right?

I'm using Vegas Pro 19 Build 358.

Thanks for suggestions.

Doesn't help with your specific question - but you should update to version 458 so you don't run into problems that are already fixed - or is that just a typo - because version 358 never existed.

One way to do this is to copy the video event to a lower track (Ctrl and drag the event downwards), add the extra VFX to that lower track, and then use the mask in pan/crop on the video event on the upper track to create the mask and feather as required. The Path Mode will probably need to be 'Positive'. In the pan/crop window, make sure that the mask checkbox is checked 'on'.

@Rob-McMillan Hi, basically no you can't mask individual fx's in the Video Effects window using Pan/Crop, but you can stack Adjustment tracks, add the fx then also add a Bezier mask to the Adjustment tracks, set as Mask FX, that will mask the fx on that track,

Drag or double click to add points on the purple line on the adjustment track to adjust it's composite level,

Or upgrade to inc Vegas effects, I'm guessing that will work similar to Hitfilm Pro where you can adjust/add fx on each individual event,

@Rob-McMillan, Let's say you want the whole video to be black and white, but only part of it to be also blurred. Do this:

  1. Add a Gausian Blur filter to the event
  2. Add the Bezier Masking FX to the event
  3. Create the mask over the part of your video you want to be blurred
  4. In the Bezier Masking controls, expand the General Options paramaters
  5. Select the Mask FX checkbox
  6. Add the Black and White filter to the chain

So, you have three FX in the chain in this order: Gausian Blur - Bezier Masking - Black and White. Anything before the Bezier Masking FX will be affected by it. Anything after it will not be.

Thank you Gary! That was exactly what I needed. Works perfectly.
