Cannot load DHxHR clips from Shogun Inferno!

megabit wrote on 1/16/2017, 11:20 PM

Well, just bought the Inferno and was expecting no problems with handling the DNxHD files under Windows (the other option being Prores). The DNxHR codec files are also wrapped in QuickTime (.mov), and I guess this is the reason they are unreadable by any applications with the lucky exception of Resolve. But no software player will play them back outside Resolve (not even VLC, Potplayer or MPC-HC); and our good old Vegas Pro will not load them either!

Am I missing something?

I think Avid Codecs required.

The free Avid codec pack for Windows is only DNxHD, isn't it?

OK - I installed bot QTfW and the Avid LE codec pack; now VP14 opens my Shogun DNxHR files just fine (frankly I don't know which helped). But stand-alone players still only recognize audio... Thanks anyway, Nick!

So I guess either my version is out of date (I don't think so), or this DNxHR codec is read-only. Do you have any DNxHR render capability?

megabit wrote on 1/17/2017, 3:07 AM

Surprisingly enough, yes - but I'm not sure if Vegas is using its own, or BMD's DNxHR codex installation... Anyway, I can even encode to DNxHR 444!

Where can we see our installed codec versions?

In this page: http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/download/Avid-QuickTime-Codecs-LE - at this time I write this comment, The latest update available is Sept 15, 2016.

Probably needs to be updated then. Let me see...

Still have installer for 2.5.0 and 2.6.0 versions.

Latest is version 2.7.3 (by the time I write this). After updated, now I can insert it:

And I can render to it too... Select Quicktime, customize, select codec, and you will find Avid DNxHR codec.

Anyone care to summarize the difference between DNxHD and DNxHR?

Anyone care to summarize the difference between DNxHD and DNxHR

Here.

Does DNxHR is 10bits in Vegas?

Marco. wrote on 1/17/2017, 7:34 AM

Vegas doesn't use 10 bit information of any VfW signal except CineForm and any Quicktime signal except ProRes (VP14).

Mind outlining the codecs that should be 10-bit but are not through Vegas? How are you verifying this info is not being passed?

DNxHD has a very restrictive definition. Only specific frame size and frame rate combinations are supported. Only HD frame sizes and the normal/common frame rates are supported. Very silly of Avid to have defined it this way.

DNxHR does not have any of these restrictions. Any frame size and any frame rate.

DNxHR can really replace DNxHD in all circumstances (except possible Avid MC interchange)

Marco. wrote on 1/17/2017, 4:41 PM

"Mind outlining the codecs that should be 10-bit but are not through Vegas?"

It's easier the other way round. The video codecs which are 10 bit capable (grafic file codecs not included) in Vegas Pro are:

- ProRes (VP14 only)
- CineForm
- HDCAM SR
- Sony YUV
- XAVC
- P2 AVC-I
Not sure about HEVC. It seems like 10 bit import works but Vegas' HEVC exports would be 8 bit only.

"How are you verifying this info is not being passed?"

I tested it with certain footage and a specified level adjustment.

NickHope wrote on 1/18/2017, 4:40 AM

We had some discussion about this bit-depth restriction in the MagicYUV thread starting here: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/magicyuv-codec-coming-on-strong-for-4k--98668/?page=3#ca648164

OK - I installed bot QTfW and the Avid LE codec pack; now VP14 opens my Shogun DNxHR files just fine (frankly I don't know which helped).

OK, so for the clarity: I uninstalled QTfW* as I don't like any "layers" which I possibly don't need at all to interfere with how both Resolve and Vegas should work on Windows - but even with the newest Avid LE codec pack installed, VP 14 stopped seeing my Inferno's AVdh-coded clips again. So Quicktime is absolutely necessary if I'd like to edit those Inferno DHxHR clips in Vegas. Having said that, I don't care at all because - for some unknown reason - the playback speed of these UHD@25p clips is pathetic in VP, anyway (just some 16 fps at Best/Full). Resolve plays them back at a stable 25fps even with lots of grading - cc'ing...

I'm still waiting for my XDCA adapter for the FS7 which will enable recording 4K@50p on Inferno using RAW-SDI output (HDMI is just 8 bit 420 at 50 fps); I suspect those files will simply be impossible for editing in Vegas at all... Magix - if you listen, please tell me: is it a matter of the Avid AVdh codec not yet being optimized for VP14, or is it yet another manifest of the lack of proper GPU acceleration of Vegas timeline?

* Is this the proper version of Quicktime to be installed on Windows 10 (the release notes only mention Vista and 7)? Some apps (e.g. Nuke) complain about it and won't even launch!

That's the one I've been using and sending people to. The lack of mention of Windows 8 and 10 may just be related to Apple abandoning development of it.

The XDCA of the FS7 will deliver Sony raw - but as far as I know it can be recorded only up to 4K 30p as CDNG only even with the Inferno. It can be converted to ProRes with 4K 50p/60p. While CDNG will not work immediately in Vegas 14, ProRes will.
