Cannot Render Project - Invalid Argument was Specified

peter-barker wrote on 6/4/2017, 4:11 AM

When I try "Project - Render as ..." I get:

"An error occurred while creating the media file.  An invalid argument was specified"

Same with: "Make Movie - Advanced Options"

However, if I use "Make Movie" and do not try Advanced Options it works OK

I have met this before, but previously managed to clear it, but how don't exactly know.  Today the problem is stubborn.

I have Movie Studio Platinum Version 14 Build 105  Computer Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7500U CPU @ 2.70GHz Physical memory: 16,269.7 MB

Help appreciated.  Thanks

Updated to build 122.   No different.  Can't access or change templates.  Always error message, see screenshot.

peter-barker wrote on 6/4/2017, 7:37 AM

Whether saved to local or network drive does not make any difference.

I can access Project - Properties and make changes to templates which then appear in the Make Movie Wizard.

What I specifically want to do is to take some WMV footage, use Make Movie to save it as AVCHD on my network hard drive.  Saving as AVCHD is an option on the Make Movie wizard.

I can do this but the final footage is distorted, too narrow. This is the same whether I leave it as WMW or AVCHD.

On the other hand, If I burn the footage to a DVD it looks acceptable on screen.

I am hoping that there is something in AVCHD Advanced options which would let me specify stretched video or similar, but not being able to access AVCHD Advanced options, I cannot see if it there.

I had a similar problem with AVCHD Advanced options before, to which I found a solution on YouTube - unticking Options - Preferences - Allow GPU rendering.  That doesn't work now.

So suggestions appreciated please.

What can I tell you so it will be clearer for you?

peter-barker wrote on 6/5/2017, 8:13 AM

OK.  Hope this clears confusion:

I select Project - Render As ... I get error message "An error occurred while creating the media file.  An
invalid argument was specified"  I can't render

I select Project - Make Movie I get screen Make Movie - Select Destination.  I select Save it to my Hard Drive

I then select Advanced options I get error message "An error occurred while creating the media file.  An
invalid argument was specified"  I can't choose any advanced options or render

However, if I select Project - Make Movie I get screen Make Movie - Select Destination.  I select Save it to my Hard Drive then I select Next it will render but based on the settings that are already there.

I cannot use Render as ...

I can render through Make Movie but for AVCHD I cannot chose Advanced Options.

MediaInfo of most used source file is MPEG-4 (see below)   But source media makes no difference to problem.

Most used project settings are: HD 1080-50i (1920x1080, 25.000 fps)

My goal is to save to my hard drive, so I can stream it.  Most of all I want to chose Advanced Options.

Hello again.

When I get to your step 3 -choose MP4, than "advanced options" I always get the error message:  "An error occurred while creating the media file.  An invalid argument was specified"

Doesn't matter what source file I am working on, always the same error message.

peter-barker wrote on 6/7/2017, 6:18 AM

Did everything you suggest.  No difference.  I uninstalled the program then reinstalled it.  I presume that is what you mean by clean reinstall?  Just the same error message.

3POINT wrote on 6/7/2017, 8:46 AM

Where is your footage coming from? Your footage is 1080p25 with a relative high bitrate (29.7 Mbps). Your project settings are 1080i50, which is wrong. 1080p25 is NO AVCHD standard, trying to make an AVCHD rendertemplate with 25p settings will fail. The error message you get is a normal message when you make settings which are not valid for the specific codec.

What you can try to do is to change the existing AVC Internet rendertemplate to your framerate.

  1. Make sure your projectsettings are 1080p25
  2. Goto Make Movie.
  3. Select "Save it to my Harddrive".
  4. Select "Advanced options".
  5. Make sure that in the renderdialog filters are off.
  6. Select Sony AVC/MVC format.
  7. Select template "Internet 1920x1080-30p".
  8. Select "Customize template"
  9. Change framerate from 29,970 to 25.
  10. Save a copy of this rendertemplate and render your project with these settings.

Have taken all steps suggested by Cornico i.e. uninstalled prog. and all files.  Amended registry etc. etc.  Reinstalled

No difference.  Cannot "Render as.." and cannot access "Advanced Settings".

Although changed project settings recommended by 3POINT cannot go any further due to always getting error message "An error occurred while creating the media file.  An invalid argument was specified"

What next?

Thanks.  Have asked support and pointed to this thread.

3POINT wrote on 6/7/2017, 1:00 PM

Can you upload a sample of your footage so we can test it with our Movie Studios?

peter-barker wrote on 6/11/2017, 11:44 AM

Some footage.  I have uninstalled and re-installed Vegas several times.  The Vegas Welcome footage which comes with the prog. is fine, but as soon as I add my own I get the error message.  I saw post on another discussion group about this problem, suggesting Options > Preferences > change "Allow Legacy GPU editing"  That overcame the fault for a while, but now it has become intractable

set wrote on 6/11/2017, 7:08 PM

Peter, can you upload it to Dropbox / Google Drive / WeTransfer / etc. ?

Just prevent the video being recompressed again by this site's engine - so that could make the file different.

Thanks for helpful comments.

I think I have got to the cause of all this.  I must render to the same drive as my *.vf project.

If I don't Project > Render As and also Make Movie > Save it to my hard drive > Advanced options won't work.

It doesn't matter if the media is on a network drive and brought over by Wi-Fi to the project as it renders in the PC.   That's OK.

When the render is complete I can copy it over to a network drive.

There is no Vegas Pro 15 (build 184). That last build was 177.

Anyway, this might be the same issue: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-15-an-error-occurred-while-creating-the-media-file--108408/
