Cannot restore Vegas window after minimising

Ian_S wrote on 10/15/2024, 4:12 AM

I'm not sure if this is an issue with my system or my (recent) installation of Vegas Pro 22, but as the problem only occurs with Vegas Pro v22, I thought I'd try here.

Whenever I minimise Vegas to the task bar, I cannot restore it. In fact I can't do anything with it other than right click->close it. I've tried Alt-Tabbing to no avail. I'm able to open another instance of Vegas, but of course any changes to the existing open copy will be lost.

Like I say, this immediately strikes me as not a Vegas issue, but because this only happens to Vegas Pro 21 (and not to any previous versions of Vegas I wonder if any other users have experienced anything similar or have any tips?

Cheers.

About to take a long hard look at Resolve, to see if it can handle my mixed format timelines without crashing. It's a shame, as I adore the Vegas workflow - but it falls over way too frequently for me to trust it. After 20+ years I've kinda had enough!

Amendment - I said 'only happens to Vegas Pro 21' - I meant Vegas Pro 22.

Added note: it's build 122 and I have uninstalled, rebooted and reinstalled, without any success. Updated build of Windows 10.

Also I just noticed that single clicking on the icon in the task bar (when Vegas is running) successfully minimised Vegas and clicking again restores it. It's only when using the minimise button in the app itself that this behaviour happens.

Two suggestions:

1. Re Windows ... delete VP22's taskbar icon and the desktop icon then copy Vegas Pro's .exe file at C:\Program Files\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro 22.0 and back at Windows' desktop R click and select Paste Shortcut which will reintroduce VP22's icon to the desktop. Then R click that icon and select 'Pin to taskbar'.

If the taskbar problem started only after installing the VP22 update to build 122, it's always a good idea in my experience to delete both the desktop and taskbar icons and create a new desktop icon as part of the update install process then create the new taskbar icon.

If that doesn't work ...

2. Try resetting Vegas Pro 22 back to its default (factory) settings via the process outlined here making sure that the cache is checked to be cleared. This often solves more problems than does uninstalling/re-installing.

Excellent, thank you! Deleting the icons didn't work, but restoring to factory worked. Thanks for the tip. I'm surprised that it has a different result to uninstalling and reinstalling. That suggests that uninstalling is not a complete removal of everything. Good to know forthe future. Now I just need to go and re-uncheck all those unwanted (unwanted in Vegas, that is) vst plugins to see if that also solves the frustrating plugin loading issue reported in the Audio section. Thanks again for your help. Cheers.

Frustratingly, the original problem has started again after a couple of weeks of being OK. I haven't updated the software (still build 122) so nothing has changed. It means that if I am working on a project then inadvertently minimise it, I cannot restore the window to save the changes. I can't keep going through the process of resetting to factory status and trying to retrain my old brain to never touch the minimise button is a losing battle.

Is anyone else experiencing the same thing or is it just me and my system?

Are you using your customized Vegas windows layout?

Also, try seeing if its something installed on your system that is interfering with Vegas.

Ian_S wrote on 11/12/2024, 3:03 AM

Sorry Steve, I missed your reply (I don't always get notifications for some reason) and then I was working away for a week. Thanks for the suggestions.

That's a good thought about the Windows layout - the only thing I change by default is to have the timeline at the top (which of course is an option in preferences) and I add icons for Vegasaur and PluralEyes on the button bar. Other than that, no, it's as it comes.

I'm guessing that as no-one else is rushing to report this as an issue then it has to be be something unique to my system. But where to begin? And where to end? Should I just start deleting every other app until it works? And then what? What if the app causing the conflict is, for example, an app like Cinema4D, which I use every day? THere's my dilemma! As I've said before, it is ONLY Vegas 22 that exhibits this issue. All other apps, when minimised to the task bar, including Vegas 21, can be restored.

It's a shame, because 22 seems to be much more stable, compared with previous versions, but I'm reluctantly having to continue to use 21 for work.

UPDATE: I hadn't noticed this until just now, when I was writing the above post, but I can restore the Vegas window from the task bar - if I DOUBLE click the icon! I just tested this with around ten other apps and they all require a single click, which is the norm in Windows. In fact, I just googled 'double click task bar icons to launch' and it seems that unless you use a third party utility, this is impossible. (I don't use one!).

So, the very good news is it looks like I can now use V22 confidently - although it still doesn't explain why this weird, apparently impossible, behavious is happening.

If VEGAS Pro 22 has been minimized a while, I've noticed that when I click the icon on the tool bar I get a beep. If I pause for a second and then click it a second time, it will restore.

Interesting. Mine only restores if I do a regular double click (i.e. quickly). It also happens whether the window has been minimised for just a few seconds.
