Capture window goes black when capturing!

Up until a couple of days ago this was not a problem. No new software, no software updates except a Win10 automatic update.

I'm capturing using the Sony video capture and the DV option. Do this a millions times. When start the VCR the input displays in the window perfectly. As soon as I click the "capture video" button the capture window goes black. The capture is still happening....I even ran it to the end of the tape and the footage is actually captured. Does anyone have any ideas??

Using Win10 and latest Vegas Pro 13 (build 453).

Did windows update your video card driver? That would be my first instinct.

I just checked and my Nvida drivers have not been updated...still a couple of updates back.

Just in case I did uninstall and reinstall Vegas....no change, and did not expect anything either.

Look under Options in the Video Capture window.

It has:
Never Preview Video
Smart Preview Video
Always Preview Video

Sounds like you have Smart Preview selected.

Smart Preview is faster on slower, older machines.

For VCR capture, go to the Sony video capture's options/preferences/general preferences and uncheck the 'enable DV device' box. This should stop the capture window from going black, based on my experience with capturing from a VCR and having the same problem. If you are later capturing from a DV device such as an 8mm digital camcorder, go back and check the 'enable DV device' choice in general preferences.

Yesterday I finally got the window working again by removing the latest windows 10 update (KB3124262). I do have the "enable DV device" checked...but too late now to test out that theory. So, something in the windows update has impacted the ancient vidcap program! Hopefully someone will fix the bug/enhancement.

I'm having the same problem, but it's not related to a Windows update. I'm using movie studio 14, but the DV capture utility is probably the same in Pro (VEGAS Video Capture build 1004). The preview window behaved as expected until I played one of the captured clips in the capture utility. With the DV camera still connected but stopped, I right-clicked on a captured clip in the clip explorer and selected Play. It started playing in the Print to Tape tab. I stopped it and went back to the Capture tab. When I tried to capture another clip, the preview window went black. I could hear the audio, and the captured clip had both video and audio. I uninstalled and reinstalled movie studio, but I don't think it refreshed video capture.

If I move the video capture window so that the preview window straddles my two monitors (so that parts of the window are on both screens), I can see video in the preview pane. When I move it solely to one monitor, it goes black again. This also sometimes causes errors in the video capture process.

Any ideas why playing a clip in the capture utility would have broken it?

@dkeithanderson I don't know how to fix your issue but Scenalyzer is a good, free alternative for capturing DV.
