I bought mine during the last sale, $149.00 after rebates, had to wait a 10 days to get it, but install was simple, so far no coasters with SVCD, or DVD's. Appears to work very well.
Thanks for the deal info.

Yeah, I have been waiting for 3 months for my rebate on a hardrive from Staples---no luck---I am tired of the rebate game---they seldom come through without spending countless hours on the damn phone----

Rebates HQ will honor the rebate, but they do take awhile. The only rebate company which has gained a reputation for not paying rebates, has complaints about them with the Better Business Office and the Attorney General's office is TCA Rebates of New Rochelle, NY. They sometimes use other names, but the New Rochelle, NY address is the giveaway. They in fact had an advertisement on the internet last year which was a guarantee to prospective companies, that they could GUARANTEE something like 20% would "not send in their rebates".
Rebates HQ always pays a legitimate claim. They also answer the toll free number on the rebate forms. Give them a call if you are worried about a rebate or look online to see if your name and your award are listed. They even post the check number they are mailing to you. I have also found that registering the rebate at their website first then following up with the paperwork seems to speed up the process.

John,
Thanks for the tip regarding this weekend. I have been spreading it around other forums also. Hope people love this burner as much as I've been reading about. Think I will take the plunge this weekend. Any idea if you can do a walk in and use all these promo's for the low price?
craftech wrote on 2/16/2003, 8:48 AM
Yes, if you use the kiosk in the store and pay for it at the register. Code 79248 may be used in store or on the phone.

Notwithstanding this great deal...
isn't it worth the extra bucks to buy the Sony DVD recording unit (don't know exact name/number) which will not only record DVD-R/RW but also DVD+R/RW?

And...
isn't the DVD+R more compatible with set top video systems?? Or otherwise? I don't know and am asking.
craftech wrote on 2/16/2003, 9:07 AM
I don't own a Sony so I'm not sure how good they are. I own a Pioneer 104 and 105. The discs burned with them play on any newer set top DVD player. The media makes the difference. Cheap media is often incompatible. I use Pioneer media and Fuji media both of which work great but cost a little more. Do your experimentation with a DVDRW disc so you can keep erasing it then burn your final copies on a DVDR. The only problem with that is that some set top units wont play a recordable DVDRW.

thanks for posting these deals, but this one doesn't appear to be quite as good as indicated.

There is also a $50 Staples rebate. Being as thrifty (aka cheap) as I am, believe me I have done the math.

They were out of these online, but my local store had two, so I picked one up and the $50 off 79248 in-store coupon mentioned above was good, so, $140 !-(+ tax of course)Thanks for the heads-up on this deal.

Where do you find the 79248 store coupon.
jboy wrote on 2/17/2003, 1:03 PM
There is no coupon. You just give them the # when you do the transaction at the store, they pop in into the register, and it takes off $50.00. I noticed that some employees dont seem to know what you're talking about when you mention the discount #, so be persistent. If they ask where you got it, just say it was sent to you in an e-mail promo offer, and that it stated it didn't require a coupon, only the #..

Did anyone save a receipt or proof of the coupons? My local Staples has one in stock and when I went to buy it they wouldn't accept the $50 discount code because the General Manager was not there to approve it. The General Manager is supposed to call me back later, I'm looking for some "ammo" if he says they won't accept it.

Thanks for any help!

Go to the kiosk in the store and order it online using the $50 off coupon code. It will give an error message which indicates that it is for "phone or store order only". Print the page and show it to the cashier. That should be proof enough that it is a valid store coupon. If push comes to shove order it at the kiosk using the $40 off coupon code and pay for it at the register. It's only a ten dollar difference.

You dont need the store manager. There's a place on the computer screen at the checkout register for 5 number discount codes. The clerk just types it in, and it comes right up. Poor Staples, they have so many deals going simaltaneously they cant keep track of them..

Also, can any of you who have this drive, or any other pioneer drive that uses the same media as it, make recommendations as to low priced DVD-R & DVD-RW disks ? I've seen some low cost 1X's made by Princo. Anybody know if these are any good, and whether or not, in general, the cheapo brands work as promised ?

Thanks for the replies, but I'm still having problems. These drives are out of stock on the Staples website, so it won't allow you to add one to your cart and therefore you can't input the discount/coupon codes to prove they're valid. The other problem is the local store doesn't have an in-store kiosk to order from. :(

Any other suggestions? I haven't heard from the manager yet, but I'm having my doubts that they'll accept it.

Thanks again!

How about another Staples store?. We have lots of them where I live (NYC metro area).
Did you try a phone order? There are phone order codes in my first post.

Princo discs may be a problem. Of the cheaper media I have heard Ritek 2x media works OK. Personally I like Fuji. I get them at BJ's wholesale club 5 for $13.99.
Fuji has discount coupons on the net so I usually get a dollar off. They also have rebate promotions (register them online for fastest response).
Of course you can't go wrong with Pioneer, Apple, and Verbatim media but they cost more.
There are user tests of media with the various drives at www.vcdhelp.com.
Also Ralph LaeBarge tested some media on a recent review at www.dv.com but his conclusion seemed to point to spending more money. Vcdhelp should be helpful as well as a search on the site for past posts.
There is also a thread going on here in the DVD Architect forum:

John,

Thanks again for your ideas and replies. Just got off the phone with them and tried to order, but there out of stock and was told they can't backorder them. I was hoping to backorder one, get the discounts printed out, go to the local Staples show them the receipt, buy one there and then cancel the phone order. Doesn't look like it's going to work though. :(

Haven't heard from the manager at the local store, so assuming no news is bad news.

I read on a post www.vcdhelp.com. of people using the Ritek 4X with no problems. I am waiting to hear a little more prior to commiting as I have not found anyone selling them at less than 25 packs. Be sure you do the firm ware update....

Thanks for all the media info, folks.

DRF,my receipt shows a $50 deduction using the 79248 coupon. It simply states, on the receipt, <Staples Coupon NO. 79248 -50.00>. Send me your e-mail address, and I'll send you the # on my receipt. I believe the store can then enter it and look at the entire receipt to verify the deduction.
