Choppy preview playback

beaverbrook wrote on 7/19/2023, 8:42 AM

As I am adding to my project, the playback, even on scenes that I have not done anything with, is getting more and more choppy and unwatchable.
I have 64gbs of ram, an RTX 4090, and a 13900x. How is it not able to play back simple clips with buttery smooth frames? Where is the hardware so strained?

I also have lots of web tabs open. Could that be hurting it?

Thanks.

If it's HEVC you can try disabling legacy HEVC decoding in preferences/ file io in VEGAS.

That CPU does have an integrated GPU, right? Is it handling decoding in preferences/ file io?

What do you see in windows task manager/performance for memory usage, CPU usage, GPU usage when things are slowing down?

…and a 13900x…

Just to clarify, do you mean you have an Intel Core i9 13900K or a AMD Ryzen 9 3900X? Because if you have the former, the Intel Core i9 13900K, that CPU has an iGPU, Intel UHD Graphics 770, and, according to several users on here, when enabled in the motherboard BIOS alongside your dedicate GPU (in your case the RTX 4090), it does a really good job in preview playback amongst other things.

But... now that I am testing it, it is playing pretty well. Although it still slows down in some places.

Yeah, I have the Intel 13900k. I guess the "x" goes with the Ryzen. Sorry.

Be happy than because your AVC mp4 has variable framerate that Vegas does not like at all.

If you continue to have issues, batch convert them to constant framerate. I use ShutterEncoder for that. For phone footage it isn't always necessary but in general I value my time more than my computer's time and just do it so I don't have issues later.

That file name format looks like OBS, if it is, you should be encoding to Fragmented mp4 which Vegas can't read and and turn on auto remux in settings and use that version in Vegas. That way you keep your constant frame rate. You are most likely encoding to mkv then remuxing to mp4 which causes the VFR. In OBS encoder settings have keyframe interval set to 1 because you are encoding at 60fps.

If you transcode existing footage use GOP of 60 or transcode via handbrake using one of the production presets
