Closed Captioning

I have a number of MXF files. I also have the SCC (closed captioning) files that go with them. I need to re-render the MXF files with the captioning embedded. I can't re- populate the captioning because it isn't there in the MXF files. Question: Is there a way to populate the captioning SCC files with the MXF files on my timeline?

File > Import > Closed Captioning... > [choose your .scc file]

Then...

Tools > Scripting > Promote Media Closed Captioning

to see your captions and their markers.

Vegas Pro works well for 608 captions. Not so good with 708.

FYI -- Give your Vegas version and build number when you ask for help. Things sometimes change between them.

Note to self (everyone else please look away -- the note that follows is a reminder for mine eyes only): Figure out a clever, kick-booty signature that suggests I'm completely aware of how to properly and exhaustively party on and that I, in fact, engage in said act on a frequent and spontaneous basis. All joking aside, listing my computer's properties is a futile endeavor. I edit multimedia in a local television station newsroom that has Vegas Pro installed on several machines with widely varied specs. We began editing non-linearly with Pinnacle Studio Version 8. That didn't last long before we upgraded to Vegas Video Version 4, then to Vegas Pro 10.

Importing closed captions from a closed captioning file

If your media does not contain embedded captioning markers, you can import markers from an external file. The following file types are supported:

Scenarist Closed Caption (.SCC)

If an .scc file matches the media file name, the captions will be read automatically when you load a file.

For example, if your video file is wildflowers.avi, naming your captioning file wildflowers.avi.scc will allow VEGAS Pro to read the captions automatically.

and be aware that the timecode on the timeline will need to match the SCC file timecode marks. (for example: if your SCC timecode starts at 01:00:00, your timeline needs to start at that time). It may default to 00:00:00:00 and if so you are fine.

I'm still having problems with this... I have about 30 PBS shows that I've done in the past that need to be rerendered with CC. As suggested. I do have the same file names ( 001.mxf and 001.mxf.scc ) but the markers do not automatically show up on my timeline.

I've also tried to
File > Import > Closed Captioning... > [choose your .scc file]
Then...

as suggested. I'm not sure what the "import" is suppose to do since when going to scripting the "promote media closed captioning" asks for the same file.

I'm sure stuck with this. Thanks for everyone's help.

Many broadcast facilities, including mine, have equipment that upconverts CC-608 to 708 automatically in the signal chain. 608 can absolutely be embedded into HD files. I do that with VP on the daily!

I do wish VP and 708 could be friends, but 608 works. Anyone who supplies content to broadcasters can find out if 608 is acceptable with a simple phone call. Many broadcasters also accept CC sidecar files, so that's often an option, too.

Don't quite know why it came out so blurry, but you should get the idea here.

The source footage in this case is SD, but it was rendered out to HD. The multichannel audio stuff isn't necessary for CC. It's just habit for me...
