Constant crashing

Alex-Moore wrote on 12/9/2024, 11:09 PM

I am using Vegas Pro 20. I have always had issues with crashing since I started using Vegas about 5 years ago. I assumed it was my antiquated computer. I recently got a new PC that should be able to handle all of my editing needs. 13th Gen Intel i9-13900F running Windows 11, Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070, 32 GB ram, 2TB SSD hard drive.

I am still having constant crashing issues. I can have one clip in my timeline and Vegas will freeze and throw the "An Unexpected error has occurred" message with no info as to why. I might get 10 minutes of work done max, but sometimes it crashes every time I open the software as soon as I hit play on my timeline. I generally like Vegas 20, and would rather not switch, but I cant handle much more of this.

If anyone needs more information, please ask.

Thanks in advance.

Hey @Alex-Moore What it's you're "video settings"

Options - Preferences - Video

Can you please share MediaInfo for the media you have crashing issues with? https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

Does turning hardware decoding to none/off in options/preferences/file io help with stability (it will hurt performance). NVIDIA decoding support was dramatically improved over the past year and is much better now.

@Alex-Moore Hi, Vegas up to VP18 - VP21 build (300) crashed on a daily basis for me, often a few times a day 😖 but since VP21 build (300) onwards to the current VP22 it hardly ever crashes, as mentioned there was/has been some dramatic improvements in recent versions.

I know you say 'I like Vegas 20, and would rather not switch' but your new PC deserves the most recent VP, there's still some improvements/tweaking as there is still work ongoing with VP but in all it's a much more stable program than it was.

You will like VP22 even more. Since Software development is an ongoing process which not only introduces new features but also much better stability and bug fixes, it will make your editing experience a lot better when you keep always up-to-date with the latest version.

Thanks everyone. Looks like its time to upgrade.

@Alex-Moore, I fully agree with @Gid. I too have been suffering from numerous crashes, freezes and hangs of VEGAS Pro 20 and the predecessors, no matter what I change. Since I upgraded to VEGAS Pro 22 (B194), however, I had zero crash/freeze/hang. Finally, I am able to concentrate on editing, rather than how to fix the problems, which simply was a waste of time. You should install the trial version to see if it really works for you, tho'.

@Alex-Moore download the trial first and see how it goes for you first before spending your money. For me, Vegas has always been very reliable since I started using it with VP14-22. Have there been crashes? Yes. But I can say the same about any video editing software I've tried from Davinci Resolve Studio w/Speed Editor to Videostudio Pro and Magix Movie Studio. Nothing is "crash proof" except maybe the old Windows MovieMaker.

I've been on VP22 since release and find it really great. I have yet to crash it doing my modest 4K editing.
