Customising Keyboard

Hi!

I have tried and failed and searched without finding the right answers. I usually work in Avid at work, switching to Vegas is a bit counter-intuitive at times. I am used to work a lot with trimmer/viewer and timeline, and there are a couple of shortcuts I am missing, and I can't seem to find a way to fix it.

I really would appreciate all the help I could get in customising my keyboard to do the following things:

  1. Jump to in point/out point. (In Avid I have this set to arrow up/arrow down)
  2. Clear in and out point.
  3. In timeline, when marking a clip- I would love if I could set in/out point on that clip in a single click.
  4. Add trimmer selection to the timeline. (In avid when I press F9, I will insert it in the timeline- pushing everything behind the needle forward. If I press F10 I will overwrite everything behind the needle. To have these two options is a big time saver, especially when working with heavy timelines)
  5. Add trimmer selection to timeline without audio. (This too is a huge timesaver. I just find it clunky to right click - drop - select add media without audio.... And a lot of the times when I try to drag media from trimmer i accidentally move the in and out points, so I have to find my points all over again. Is there at least a way to only choose in and out point with keyboard?)
  6. Jump to start/end of timeline.

Sweet! What a great software, thanks. Never heard of it. Still, it does not resolve my preference for customising keyboard to some of the mentioned commands.

Look under OPTIONS>CUSTOMIZE KEYBOARD. Also if you have something like the Contour Shuttle Pro or Express you can create custom keys and macros

Yes, I have tried customise keyboard under options, but can't seem to find the right commands for my specific preferences. Nothing called insert or overwrite etc.. So I was hoping to find a work around. Will definitely check out Contour Shuttle. Thanks.

First of all, since you are new to Vegas, welcome.

You can do all of those things, at least from my interpretation of your 'wish list' descriptions, though the names of those routines might be different, perhaps.

Now, first things first: if you want to quickly get to know the guts of this program and little tricks, you should watch Adrew Devis' series. He also has series on Adobe stuff, and he is just terrific and very cogent, no fluff, and a great teaching style. You can access ALL of his videos here, he's also at Creative Cow and Youtube, all free. His series is comprehensive, and not filled with teenage weirdness and awful beats music you see on more amateurish offerings on Youtube especially. There are some good series besides his, but his are the best and nearly exhaustible as far as what one really needs to know.

He has a great segment on editing keyboard shortcuts. What you don't find, sometimes there are custom scripts for. Check the VP Scripting segment on this forum.

To add video as a take, or across time, 'video only' you right click from project media list (or explorer, or elsewhere) and drag. it will then give you that option you'd want....( looks like you might have already discovered this, but who knows)

If you simply double click a file in the project media section, (not clk and drag) it will open up on the timeline in selected track at the cursor without the ability to select only the video or audio, OR it will open in the Trimmer, you have your choice of those options only in the Preferences general tab, I believe. Once inside the Trimmer if you right click on the viewing panel you can select video only as well, and then whatever action you take will be video (or audio is selectable as well) only.


You have to, now (this is new for just the last couple of Vegas versions) select which action buttons you wish to show as a default in the trimmer and track list, and you do that by way of hamburger menu (I hate that name) start with all of them "select all" save your project and then eliminate, perhaps, those you don't use or rarely use, then save that project to keep those new "defaut" settings. The others are still accessible via the hamburger.

Once you can see those activated buttons, if you hover over any single button it will show its key command, if available.....if not, it is probably assignable and changeable as well.

Wow, this helps a lot! Thank you so much. I was starting to lose faith in the software's workflow being as effective as I would like. So you basically won my heart back to Vegas with that post 😀 I find the best thing about Vegas is how it can handle so many fileformats, and how easy it is to access material without having to proxy it all; considering you got a high end system.

You are welcome!... Workflow is where the program shines. It needs a bit of TLC on certain routines on timeline (I'm constantly pestering Gary on this, hello Gary!!).....but it is a WYSIWYG monster, at least in it's somewhat un realized total potential... Andrew Devis will unearth so many amazing little obscure tricks....Spend time with him, it will be well worth the time spent.

My recommendation is on any complex parts, pre render, makes life easier. Happy Otter Scripts has some great routines for getting that done in many ways, and I love his Trim video feature, absolute lossless duplication and you then dump the original track with all the unneeded bloat.
