Damaged M2T files

Barry W. Hull wrote on 12/1/2011, 8:16 AM
Created with a Sony HVR-Z5U camera and originally in good condition, I now have several M2T files which seem to be damaged. The files appear normal in Windows Explorer. I first noticed the damage when I tried to open the VEG file which used them, and Vegas crashed. I then tried to open the individual M2T files in Windows Media Player and they would not play, sometimes crashing Media Player. Most of my M2T files play as expected, but I have several, seemingly random, that now seem corrupted.

Does anyone know of a way that might work to repair these files? I searched and found several programs I thought might do the trick, but none of them worked on M2T files, Mpeg2repair, VideoRedo, AviDemux2.

Thanks,

Barry Hull

see if handbrake can open them...

Thanks. Downloaded HandBrake, got it to work on known good files, however it would not work on the damaged M2T files.

Error message, "Your source may be copy protected, badly mastered or in a format which HandBrake does not support".

... still hoping there is a solution.

I feel your pain.
I have the same camera but haven't experienced corrupt files...I did have 1 file that vegas was not able to read a while back and I used Format Factory to convert it to AVI. I just don't remember if the original file was m2t....might be worth a shot. Format factory is freeware.

Another program that could help you is TMPGENC.
If you can make the file available somewhere, I can try it on my computer..I'm stepping out for the next 2 hours....let me know.

Thanks, but neither worked. Most of these programs list MTS and M2TS, but not M2T. Did find a program called 4U M2TS Converter, which accepts M2T files, but mine did not work.

Will the corrupt files play back on your Sony HVR-Z5U camera?

No, but thanks for the suggestion. I copied one of them back to the smart card, loaded it in the camera, and it would not play. There were several files already on the smart card which played AOK.

Looks like these files are in bad shape.

Since you've tried everthing else, consider trying to demux and remux them in tsMuxer. Maybe you could get video or audio.

Thanks John, just tried tsMuxer, but like the other programs, it recognized M2TS, MTS, and many others, but not M2T, never let me get started.

I learned my lesson... better backup.

Try changing the file extension to .M2TS .MTS mpg .mpg2 .mpeg .mpeg-2 see if this work.

VideoReDo will process .m2t files. (You need to display "all files" because it doesn't recognize the extension.) I rendered to mpeg 2 program stream apparently OK.

Also try AVS video Remaker or AVS Video Converter.

Maybe even try placing one of your corrupt files on the timeline in Vegas and just rendering it to .m2t. Even if the first one won't play back, it just MIGHT get fixed this way???

You might also try one of the Womble products. MPEG Video Wizard and MPEG-VCR both have a few tools for fixing MPEG-2 errors. I just tried these tools on some m2t files from my Sony FX-1 (should be similar to your FX-7 files) and the tools did read and operate on these files. Of course these files have no problems, so nothing was done.

Are any of your files small enough to upload (under 100MB)? I would be happy to try to attempt to fix it with these tools, if you don't have access to Womble (although you might be able to use the trial version).

Jerry K, I tried all those extensions, none worked.

PeterDuke, I mispoke when I said it never let me get started. I had changed to "all files" and was able to select the M2T file, but got an error when the render was started, as with all the software I tried.

inaginACTION_films, Vegas did not allow me to drag one of the corrupted M2T files onto the timeline.

johnmeyer, tried Womble, got error also, would not open the file.

Thanks,
