Dialogue Boxes All Changed

RixWare wrote on 3/24/2015, 5:58 PM
When I sat down to work today (Vegas 13.0, Build 428, 64-bit, Win7), all of my dialog boxes in Vegas had changed -- significantly, and for no apparent reason. Here's an example of what I see now when I try to insert text:

Here's what I used to see:

Here's my Brightness/Contrast box:

Here's what I used to see:

I get similarly formatted dialogues for all effects and transitions -- well EVERYTHING!

I have no idea how I got here or how to get back to the ones I know and love -- the ones with tabs. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Have you looked at Options->Preferences->Display tab, to see if the checkbox for "Use Vegas color scheme" is selected?

The colors change, but the dialogue box contents do not.

I've also tried an uninstall/reinstall. No change.

If it were just a "skin" change of some sort, I wouldn't worry about it. But, in addition to everything being in strange places, the contents and functionality of these boxes seems to have changed as well.

I also noticed, when I opened the program today, that my workspace had changed. The video preview, which I normally dock, was floating, and the audio bus window, which I always have docked and showing, was hidden.

Beyond closing the program when I was done yeasterday, I can't think of ANYTHING that I did which might have caused this...

Where did you get the screen grab of what you use to see?

Google images... But these match exactly what I've always been used to.

This is "marketing." Microsoft does it all the time. Same or similar function, new look. According to a Microsoft ex I spoke with, this is done, at least in part, to support the notion that the newest version of software is "better" because it's different.

In the case of what you're referring to it doesn't appear to effect the functionality, just the look, but it did take me some getting used to.

I think those images are from Vegas 8.0 ... my dialogues look like what you are seeing now .. seems normal to me .. I can't explain why you think things have suddenly changed on you ... the look and function of the dialogues has not changed for a number of versions .. not sure when they did change .. I don't know of any preference to change them.

Basically, yesterday I had one set of dialogues, and today they all look different. It's more than a little disorienting, it pretty much prevented me from getting any work done today...

I do still have Vegas 7.0 on my system, but I haven't used it since I upgraded.

Is it possible that 13.0 has been showing me effects/dialogues from the 7.0 install -- and now I'm just seeing something I should have been seeing all along?

That would be pretty depressing as I'm under a monstrous time crunch right now to get something done...

Does your Windows Desktop also look different?

I don't seeing anything in your VP13 samples that you shouldn't be seeing in VP13.

Your Media Generator Text sample is correct. However you are comparing "LEGACY Text" to "Title and Text", and they are different and should be different by design.

Unless I'm missing something, your Brightness and Contrast sample is as it should be in VP7 and now VP13.

What we now have in VP13 is the ability to use Keyframing the parameters that have a "Clock" Icon next to that control.

So, unless there is something other than this you are concerned about, I don't see an issue.

If this changes also affect ENTIRE application in Windows, not just Sony Vegas Pro, it's possible the problem is from Windows itself, the Windows-aero (Microsoft's info) feature suddenly turned off.

The changes are ONLY in Vegas, not Windows generally.

I'm now seeing that the two text boxes have different titles, however I got there by selecting "Insert | Text Media..." from the menu. One day that command brought up the legacy version (without me realizing that's what it was), and the next day it took me to the (I guess) newer version.

Also, I have verified that I can bring up the old text dialogue by selecting "Insert | Generated Media..." from the menu and then selecting "(Legacy) Text".

As far as I can tell, there was no update from Sony... It's starting to sound like some sort of unwelcome change in the registry. I have been unable to find any settings within the program that affect this.

So the question becomes, how does Vegas decide which dialogue to bring up when you select "Insert | Text Media..." from the menu?

Answer that question and it becomes a clue to finding out what changed that affected all of my dialogues.

That said, I'm starting to realize that this may represent "progress" and I'm going to have to go through this learning curve right now...

RixWare, how do you normally launch Vegas? Do you usually click on the Vegas program icon, or do you normally click on an exiting .veg file? What i'm thinking is that if it's the latter you might still have .veg associated with an older version of Vegas, maybe 8 or 9, and have been using that all along without noticing it. Maybe this time you launched Vegas directly and got 13 instead of the old version.

Vegas 10 started introducing those changes you're seeing, and by version 11 most of the dialogs had been changed.
RixWare wrote on 3/25/2015, 11:53 AM
I upgraded to 13 for the additional HD stability, and immediately enjoyed its benefits. Upon install, all .VEG files started opening in 13 right away. (I open Vegas both ways, about 50-50.)

There was no real reason that I didn't uninstall the old version. I was a little surprised that the new version didn't overwrite the old. I have had no reason to use 7 since upgrading. But it's still there, so that wasn't what caused the change.
