Distorted audio on mp4 (plays fine in VLC)

Hi,

I just bought Movie Studio 16.0 (build 167) and was going to edit a few mp4 files together and export as one single file.
The problem is that when I drag the mp4 video so that I can edit, when I press play the video playback is fine but the audio is a really loud distored hiss - the volume meters are off the scale! Reducing the volume only reduces the volume of the distorted hiss signal. The video(s) play fine in VLC media player so I assume there's no codec missing. Does anyone have an idea as to what might be going on please?

The part which I cannot understand is that it didn't happen at all in v13, v16, and it didn't happen for a little while after I started using v17, and then suddenly started happening for no apparent reason.
