Distorted audio on mp4 (plays fine in VLC)

Davian-Dent wrote on 12/11/2019, 10:37 AM

Hi,

I just bought Movie Studio 16.0 (build 167) and was going to edit a few mp4 files together and export as one single file.
The problem is that when I drag the mp4 video so that I can edit, when I press play the video playback is fine but the audio is a really loud distored hiss - the volume meters are off the scale! Reducing the volume only reduces the volume of the distorted hiss signal. The video(s) play fine in VLC media player so I assume there's no codec missing. Does anyone have an idea as to what might be going on please?

Best regards,
David

Can you upload a sample to Drive or Dropbox?

j-v wrote on 12/11/2019, 11:35 AM

Probably your thoughts were good and the used audio file is coded with another codec or with setting this program cannot handle direct.

you can find the type of file that is used with MediaInfo and if you share the outcom here maybe someone can help you. See here how to give that Info: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

Thanks for that MediaInfo, nothing wrong with the file and the used audio codec. Normally they play good in VMS 16.
Can you tell which audiodevice on your hardware is used in VMS 16? That you can check and choose here

yeah I tried all of them. Gutted.
I imported a totally different video and that was fine. It's odd that VLC didn't have an issue. It's especially annoying as I only bought the software this afternoon!
Maybe I should convert it to another format with Handbrake and try again...

You can use Drive (of Google): https://www.google.com/intl/us_ALL/drive/
or Dropbox : https://www.dropbox.com/ to put the files on and give here the link to such a file.
You can split a mp4 of 2GB into f.i. 1 minute with the free MP4 Splitter of the free prog MP4 joiner : http://www.mp4joiner.org

AC3 wrapped in MP4 is a no-go for Movie Studio (and Vegas Pro). Best you can do probably is to re-encode such files with a different audio codec.

Aha! I see - thank you so much!
I'll run it through Handbrake to use something other than AC3.
Awesome help and support - cheers!

If wrapped in MP4 and video being encodec as AVC, then AAC is a good choice for audio.

I also used Handbrake and with that other audio codec the file is good accepted by VMS 16.
Probably now is Vegas also better see the lenght of the audio file because as the original it is longer than the video.
I show you that in my screengrab of my trial with your file. First on the timeline the original and second the file trough Handbrake.

@Marco.
Do you know why that Handbrakefile not can open in VPro 17 and even not shows up in the Vegas Explorer?

Does that mean this particular HandBrake file works fine in Movie Studio 16 but does not in Vegas Pro?

I've abandoned HandBrake since a while so I can't test. My FFmpeg converted version where I copied the video stream without re-encoding and only transcoded AC3 to AAC works fine in both Movie Studio and Vegas Pro.

Yess and that seems very strange to me, but it is also already a longtime I did not use it myself because for my cams and Screengrabs I don't need it anymore.
I only hold it loaded and updated to maybe help others like the OP.
Maybe it is caused because I let it get the extension m4v in stead of mp4.
I'll try that tomorrow, now I'm going to sleep.😌

By trying to see differences between VMS 16 and VPro 17, I saw more strange behaviour of, for me, VPro 17. I made from the difference between both a screenvideo and from a strange difference between adding from the explorer or Project Media of the lenght of the audiofile a screengrab. Maybe you can report this to the developpers if needed?

1. Difference between adding from Explorer and Project Media

2. Difference between handling of a m4v file out of Handbrake between VMS 16 and VPro 17

3. Also strange that after this trying in VPro 17 and only starting a new project without first closing and starting the program, repeatedly the program froze with a white screen and had to be closed by the taskmanager.

AC3 wrapped in MP4 is a no-go for Movie Studio (and Vegas Pro).

That is the correct answer, afaiac.

VRD reports no broadcast stream errors or resync frames in this too-short-to-tell sample.

M4V is an elementary video stream container.

Apple's name for elementary video stream is AVS, which is rarely seen in the wild.

Changing the extension from M4V to MP4 should allow it to open in all versions of Vegas, as long as the audio is AAC, and unless something else is broken.

M4V is actually just Apple's name for MP4 that has chapter support. It is no longer necessary, but the two are structurally identical; and, for playback, can be used interchangeably today, except in much older iThingies.

M4A is the corresponding audio format, which wraps AAC for iTunes.

As a Handbrake user, just set the Preference to MP4 only. Otherwise, fancy-pants Handbrake automatically changes the extension depending on the presence or absence of chapter marks.

Based on the information given, there is a 99% likelihood that the M4V extension is not registered in VP17.

Sounds like a minor bugfix for Magix.
