Ahh... a memorial moment in Chicago broadcast history. I remember too. Back then WTTW, channel 11, the public TV channel carried Dr. Who, Masterpiece Theater and other British fare sprinked in with American stuff. I bet a lot of kids were allowed to stay up and watch Dr. Who. If i remember right it started at either 10:30 or 11:00 PM. I was long past being a kid, but I liked to stay up to in order to see where next that crazy telephone booth teleporter, time travel thing would show up. BTW, that sure was a extra long scarf Dr. Who always seemed to have on.

All i know is that when I would stay up late and watch Dr. Who - we had no idea when it would be on, but we'd be passing through the channels and see a show. So cheap looking, So low budget that it HAD to be Dr. Who. We'd watch for a little bit - and rest assured - it was. That's part of what made the show so great in the first place to me. I still hold to my statement that if the Da-Leck (or however you spell/say it) got too upset they would just -BOOM- blow up and plungers would go flying everywhere ;-) "YOU WILL OBEY, YOU WILL OBEY" - if you've seen the show you know how those words sound.

OK, I'm dating myself... probably long before there was a Dr. Who, there was Captian Video, a very early 50's TV show Now this I remember when I was a kid http://www.slick-net.com/space/video/index.phtml

And I don't know about anywhere else in the country but in Chicagoland on Sundays afternoons, there was Buck Rodgers. Just reruns of the late 30's serial that played in movie theaters, long before there was a Jim Kirk and Mr. Spock, there was Buck Rodgers and Dr. Zarkoff, fighting Ming, master of the Universe. Had some hot babes for the 50's too. As the web page below documents, two of the recuring lead female roles, Dale Arden the blond (Jean Rogers) and the smashingly sultry Aura (Priscilla Lawson). Both Dale and Aura are very obviously unfettered by bras or other underwear.

Scroll down on this page and check them out.

New Who impresses ex-Doctor McCoy
By Sylvester McCoy
Doctor Who, 1987-1989

Sylvester McCoy
Sylvester McCoy played Doctor Who from 1987 until 1989
Actor Sylvester McCoy, who played Doctor Who before the show was axed in 1989, gives his verdict on the first episode of the sci-fi show's new series.

It was great to sit down and watch the new Doctor Who from the very first moment, knowing I was not in it.

When I was the Doctor, I was the one hiding behind the sofa as soon as that exciting 1960s theme tune started.

The episode began by zooming into our universe, down to Europe, Britain and London, into the bedroom of Billie Piper's character Rose before she rushed off to her department store job.

We were given several glimpses of her day, which wonderfully conveyed a sense that life was passing her by, without a single word being said.

After saving Rose's life the Doctor blew up the department store in spectacular fashion - it was a pretty good beginning

Have your say on the show

The adventures started when Rose went into the shop basement, wandering along famous dark Doctor Who corridors which I always found myself running up and down.

When shop dummies suddenly came to life, it was a fitting homage to old Doctor Who stories (1970s episodes Spearhead from Space and Terror of the Autons) as well as introducing a new and exciting Who.

Just as Rose was about to be chopped to death by hard plastic hands, another alien came to pull her away. The Doctor had made his entrance.

After saving her life he blew up the department store in spectacular fashion. It was a pretty good beginning.

Christopher Eccleston as Doctor Who
Christopher Eccleston was quite alien as the Doctor - he looked wonderful
Sylvester McCoy
Christopher Eccleston was quite alien as the Doctor. He looked wonderful.

He had this manic grin which worried me. We were not sure if he was on the edge of insanity or not, which was rather good. He just ran into danger with such gusto, he galloped at it joyfully.

Billie Piper was just quite fantastic, she really was wonderful in the role. The relationship between the two of them was quite extraordinary.

In a way this Doctor was not the brightest brain in the universe - he's a bit like an Oxford don in that he's full of brains but with not much nous.

RichMacDonald, you haven't lived until you've seen a dude zip around the universe in a phone booth. I'm still trying to figure out what kind of brownies, and what quantities of them, the writers must have eaten to come up with Dr. Who.

With all this talk about Dr. Who, I'm trying to remember if K-9 ever barked. I know he could wag his tail.

I dont remember his bark but he had a nasty bite! remember the red laser beam that shot from his nose?
Yes Maasta !

If K9 and the robot from "Lost In Space" (TV version) got into a fight, who would win?

My money is on the Lost In Space robot. A KO in the 1st round.

Danger will robinson DANGER!
I disagree, what with them overgrown "Slinky" arms of his ;)
PossibilityX wrote on 3/28/2005, 4:10 PM
Epirb, that's part of my reasoning RE: the outcome of the match. The robot has the reach advantage on K9, and even though he's not too mobile, K9 is worse. (Davros could probably out-dance both of them, but I think the Robot would win the trash-talking contest at the weigh-in, going on ad infinitum about how the whole thing is a mis-match that "Doesn't compute" and how even the effete Dr. Smith would be "a worthier opponent.")

Plus, remember the robot can shoot lightning bolts out of his arms, which is a good counter to K9's laser beam.

However, if K9 can manage to pull the robot's power pack, he might end up surprising THIS skeptical odds-maker.

But the match I'd really like to see, now that I mentioned them both, is Davros vs. Dr. Smith. I'd like to see Davros carry Smith for 15 rounds, constantly taunting him with "EX-TER-MIN-ATE!" before finally putting him to sleep.
