DVDA bug and fix.

Thanks Dave S, I'm holding off buying the upgrade until this bug is fixed, it is a shame that the Sony Tech Support people could not have listened to my pleas in the first instance instead of passing me over with responses like 'you'll just have to work around it' and this classic:
"This is a very common issue with all DVD burning applications, from Nero to Roxio to Sony to Pinnacle to Adobe. You name it, they all have these cases."
The negatives that I received were less than encouraging!

"I'm holding off buying the upgrade until this bug is fixed"

Why? When you can still get the discounted upgrade price now - go ahead, just don't install it until the bug is fixed.

Holding off on purchasing the upgrade until the bug is fixed makes no sense whatsoever.

1) In a short time you won't be able to get the upgrade price.
2) you already have the problem (it's been around since 1.0), so nothing is going to change in that regard.
3) There are other features (like frame accurate chapter marks & scripting) that may make the upgrade worth it even without the bug fix.
4) Multiple versions can co-exist on the machines without problems - I've got 5, 6 and 7 along with 2, 3 and 4 on the same machine.

I went ahead and got the upgrade for $135 on line. I only had Vegas 6, but now I also have the DVDA 4. I was using the DVDA 3 studio version to prepare it. For this price I get the Version 7, DVDA4 and the fix. I haven't had any problems with my finished disks as long as I use DVD+Rs. But I noticed that Version 6 and 7 do not work on this machine. Version 7 took over. Is there anything on 6 that I should keep?

There is another approach when only one model of DVD Player refuses to play a disc properly.
Recently I had a problem with a replicated disc I authored with DVD Workshop which would not play on just one recent Sony player. DVPNS50P from memory.
It would not play past the first title on a multi title DVD.
I demonstrated to Sony that every other model in their range past and present did not have the problem.
They went back to the factory and solved the problem with what I believe was a firmware update.
These are easy to apply but admittedly some customers may be annoyed at having to upgade their machines.
At least Sony came to the party. Maybe LG should do the same.

Digging this thread up from the dead:

For those interested, the "unreferenced stream" issue that folks were seeing on some DVD recorders (LG) has been fixed in the 4.0b update.

Just wanted to thank those on this thread who helped us track this down and fix it.

I am not totally convinced that the issue has been completely fixed with the latest update to DVDA 4.0b. Although the 'navigation error' is no longer apparent there is now an issue in moving from an introduction media to the menu on some players. In some instances the DVD freezes following the introduction and will only move on to the menu if the play button is pressed in other instances the DVD refuses to play past the introduction at all! In yet other instances the DVD plays perfectly. Each instance is in a different player.

This is an interesting thread for me because I have been using MediaChance's DVD Lab Pro since it's inception...I got DVDA as part of a bundle with Vegas 7, and I'm really looking forward to comparing the two feature wise, and also from a compatibility point of view. I must say, that my compatibility rate with CopyToDVD which is bundled with DLP has been excellent...I did upgrade to the full version of Copy2DVD, as the full version give you a lot more features....

It is interesting to note that, although I've had essentially no problems, there are numerous posts on their forum from people who have, so I thnk that in a lot of case; it boils down to individual systems....

I will also say that it seems MediaChance issues bug fixes faster than I can install them! Not really, but they do seem to come in droves right after a version upgrade (currently at v 2.30)...

Once I get competent on DVDA4, I'll post some of my comparative experiences.

Does anybody know if the Navigation Error problem have been corrected with VP8, at least in DVDA Pro 4.5 please? Sony claimed to have fixed it in 4.0b but my experiences indicate there is still a problem.

speaking of DVDA errors, don't make this mistake:

I frequently use older DVDA dvd saved files (eg with menus in them) from prior projects, for my current projects.

Apparently though, DVDA will truncate your videos without you knowing about it, eg if the media you use for a new project is longer than the media for the former project.

I only found this out after getting back DVD proofs to review, and finding out some of the videos had been chopped off. Investigating, I found that in the Timeline tab of DVDA, it showed that it had arbitrarily decided to set the "stop" of each video at the prior DVD's settings.

So be careful if, like I , you re-use DVDA project files (so the menus are the same etc) .. with new footage, because otherwise it doesn't tell you, and it was really hard to find..

Looks as if I have to answer my own question...The problem has been corrected in DVDA 4.5. Better late than never.
