Enhancement. bump if you agree...

I can't believe that such a sophisticated program as Vegas hasn't made this simple enhancement yet.

Has anyone requested that Sony differentiate recent paths between SAVE, RENDER, and OPEN?

programs like Combustion have... for years.

That is to say, when i tell vegas to "Save As", it should revert to the most recent folder i used for that command.

And when i tell it to "Render As", it should do the same.

Same thing with importing footage or media.

The file management system is just sad, it should have been well fixed by v7.

bump if you agree, maybe i am wrong.

Well, I never really thought about it, but now that you brought it up, every program that I can recall does what you think is proper. And I sat and thought through several dozen that I use.

Perhaps Sony should at least have a look at this idea.

They don't all behave that way, and some of the most egregious examples, which drive me up the wall, insist on using the last folder you used for opening a file as the default save location, or even better, they default to a my documents folder on the C; drive [which I never use for data]. Vegas is not alone in this morass.

i know all programs don't behave this way. I am no programmer, but this seems like it would be an easy enough change to implement. the amount of times i have had to go search for a *.VEG file because it isn't in my "project files" folder is silly.

i know it is human error on my part, but it would be a sweet and simple upgrade.

i have found a crusade!

don't get me wrong, i know Vegas is the best. I run a video dept and we just hired a certified FCP editor. She has begun using Vegas and is quite jealous of the multiple takes, the real-time previews, everything.

Wayyyyy back in version 3 I suggested this to Madison through their product suggestion page, but still not present. I think the programmers have done a great job for the most part so I assume this is the case because they haven't felt there was enough demand for it.

. . do a search in this forum to what we have been saying . . . eh . once or thrice?

ACID Pro actually has a menu devoted to PATHS you can set up. AP is made by the same people that make Vegas.

Just thought I'd do the Search for you. Kinda said before - but worth repeating again . .

It would be nice to have Vegas work this way - count me in.

I like what Microsoft Word does. It lets you specify your own default directories for various file types. Then when you open/save one of those types the dialog box goes to that directory first. Of course, you can still move around anywhere you wish at that point too.

A "Paths" dialog should be on the preferences / options page, IMO. I use a version of a batch render script with a GUI to select multiple veg's and multiple render types, and I modified it slightly to always render to a parallel "renders" folder from the VEG folder I'm in. Whenever I don't use that script I'm always surprised at where the Render As dialog takes me.

This was on the V7 wish list recently. And will make the V8 wish list soon if it hasn't already. How about a V7c Christmas gift from Madison?

Really, this would be a huge timesaver, with what I (technically) assume is fairly easy to implement. It would make a lot of people happy with a small effort on their part!

NUDGE (not quite a bump) ;-)

This is not just a Vegas problem. Lots of programs behave this way. BUT! This can also be a big problem on it's own. Paint Shop Pro remembers all of these folders separately but that means that when I open a file, modify it, and do Save As it does NOT start in the folder I opened the file from! (which 99% of the time is where I want to save it) It starts somewhere totally different on my PC that was the last place I did a saved as. So this is a double edged sword. Quite often I don't pay attention and save files that i can no longer find without bringing the application back up and doing a save as again just to see what the folder is set to.

ACID has a nice feature that gives you separate definable paths for Record, Extract from CD, Render Project, Render To New, Chop To New, and New MIDI. Then you can override all of them by selecting <Project> and it saves everything in the project folder. It would be great if Vegas would implement the same feature as ACID.

BUMP. While we're at it, can we get Video Capture and/or Vegas to remember the path of captured clips and automatically recreate them when you recapture?

OT, but related: boy, do I wish Microsoft would get rid of the whole cutesy "My Documents" concept and let me just pick the default folders I want certain types of files to go to!

Bump.

The acid way sounds fine. Be good to save that pref in the project file.

While they're at it, the tabbed layout for prefs isn't useful when you have too many tabs. It needs to be ditched for something like what Firefox uses.
