Erratic Mouse Behavior

RedRob-CandlelightProdctns wrote on 2/20/2025, 9:12 PM

I've been experiencing some unusual, erratic mouse behavior for quite some time now.

I thought it was just my mouse. Or just my PC. Then I came to realize -- it only behaves this way in Vegas.

I still thought it was just my mouse, until my beloved and partner across the room today called out "WHAT THE HECK?!". Her mouse also was experiencing one of the two oddities that mine has, also in Vegas.

So here I am asking our collective Vegas family -- has anyone else experienced odd Mouse behaviors while using Vegas?

For note -- we're both using the Logitech M570. The two behaviors are:

  1. Mouse Wheel to the extreme -- while scrolling the wheel (with or without Ctrl) to zoom in/out of the timeline, it goes ALLLLLllll the way out (or in). The fix: click the wheel down, click the wheel to the left, click the wheel to the right. Voila.. problem solved.. for a while.. until it comes back.

  2. Single Click as Double-Click -- When I single-click, 3/4 the time it acts as a double-click, jumping my timeline cursor to the beginning of a region, beginning of project, event, etc., rather than just moving the timeline cursor to where I clicked.

I do have another kind of mouse I'm going to switch to next -- but in the meanwhile -- are we the only ones who have experienced this?! Or maybe there's actually some Vegas-specific problem that nobody is talking about?

My mouse never behaves erotically. I'm quite disappointed 😂

#2 is a classic symptom of a failing/dirty mouse. Over time, grime gets into the switch. I've extended the life of a few mice by opening them up and cleaning the microswitches with contact cleaner spray. Usually that requires prying off the little feet/stickers on the bottom of the mouse that cover the screws. You can be quite liberal in spraying it in there, and then leave it to dry before using again.

Or just get a new mouse.

Hey @NickHope! I'll admit, #1 is the symptom we both are experiencing with #2 just falling upon my erotic mouse. You may be right on the double-click thing.

I did change to the M505 this evening (an erotic mini-mouse, smaller than the other), and just had #1 happen again while using that mouse (same unifying receiver). The double-clicking *does* seem better with this mouse, although sometimes trying to double-click a track FX envelope still slight-misses and causes a timeline jump.. just way less with this mouse.

I'd attribute both to somehow relating to the USB busses on my computer, but since it now is happening on our 2nd computer/laptop, it kinda' rules that out.

I've used this mouse and it is not erotic so changed the thread title. (do not search for erotic mini mouse). I assume you mean erratic, meaning performing inconsistently.

This isn't a VEGAS issue and when my m505 stopped working switched to a Logitech G Pro which I like a lot.

Hey @RogerS -- of course I meant "performing inconsistently". Thank you so much for correcting that definitely unintentional-and-not-to-be-humorous-or-draw-attention-to-this-thread typo.

I wouldn't have thought it a Vegas issue -- but then having it happen to two M570's and then the M505, and appearing to happen only in Vegas (granted -- that is where we spend most of our on-computer time) -- made me wonder if that is true. Next time the scroll-wheel issue happens (now with the M505) in Vegas, I'll click over to a browser window and see if the wheel does the same thing. Would you agree if I switch to a browser window and it is normal, then click back into Vegas and it's not normal -- that perhaps it is somehow Vegas-related?

M570 “2.4 GHz connectivity provides fast transmission and virtually no delays.”

Are the two of you sitting near a wireless wi-fi router or access point?

RogerS wrote on 2/21/2025, 12:35 AM

I used the M505 for years with VEGAS and now use both a corded and cordless mouse so no I don't think it's VEGAS related. John's explanation of interference is more likely, esp. if the receiver is a bit far or behind a desktop with various other sources of RF. The G Pro design with the receiver at the end of a cable close to the mouse is better.

My experience with expensive Logitech mice has been poor, three of the £75 each mice have failed in this way after approx 18 months. I now just buy Amazon basics mouse (very similar) which is still going strong 2.5 years on.

(Intel 3rd gen i5@4.1GHz, 32GB RAM, SSD, 1080Ti GPU, Windows 10) Not now used with Vegas.

My computer mouse is about 3' from our router.

The unifying receiver is in the front of the computer (not rear), also about 3' from the router.

The router has been wall mounted in this position for the past 5 years and computer hasn't moved either. So the problem beginning within the past year suggests it isn't proximity to the router causing the issue, ya?

2nd computer is across the room, about 20' away.

Try a wired mouse and report.
