Error 0x80660008 when rendering with "Upper fields first"

mark1g wrote on 3/18/2022, 7:30 AM

Hi, i`v been getting this really irritating problem lately, basically when i try to render my video at Upper or Lower fields first, i get error message:

"An error occured when creating the media file (name of file)

Error 0x80660008"

When i render with Progressive scan, i don`t get this error, but i really need to render in either Upper or Lower fields, to get better quality and motion blur.

If anyone knows the fix, i would be extremely grateful.

That's probably an error caused by your GPU, try rendering without NVENC support.

Yes, a non-NVENC interlaced works as does a NVENC progressive render. Is this indeed an issue with NVIDIA or is a MAGIX VP issue? Just curious.

Are you rendering for a Bluray? If not, try to render to 1080p60 (with NVENC) instead of 1080i60.

Yes, Blu-Ray. I can render progressive and then leave it for DVD-A to deal with it, but that seems silly (but certainly a possibility - as is a 60i CPU render)

No, makes no sense. Bluray specs accept only 1080i60. You're stuck to 1080i60 when rendering for Bluray. 1080p60 is an option when rendering for Youtube, PC and TV.

@3POINT

I do agree with the 60fields to 60P the way QTGMC and Resolve can do to keep full temporal resolution but I didn't think Vegas has that ability, you'd have duplicate frames at 60P, so better to use 30P?

Won't that depend on your source framerate? If it's 60i you should get 60p. If it's 30p then yes going to 60p will give duplication unless you resample. Or maybe I'm misunderstanding something here.

Former user wrote on 2/5/2023, 6:19 PM

@EricLNZ I don't think Vegas has the ability to interpolate each field consisting of 50% scan lines into full frames, the way QTGMC/Resolve does, so the best that could be achieved is 60frames consisting of 50% scan lines, and I"M not sure that would work as far as how brain would perceive the motion. When stepping through an interlaced video on Vegas it's not possible to see individual fields, so transfering each field to a frame may not even be possible, but also, may not be wanted if not interpolated into full frames

EricLNZ wrote on 2/5/2023, 6:48 PM

@Former user That's incorrect. I'm a VMS user not Pro, but VMS17 which is effectively a "cut down" version of VP, allows me to see every field of an interlaced frame.

I just need to alter my project properties from 25i to 50p. The preview window then shows me both fields from every frame interpolated into 50 frames per second. Normally with a 25i project the preview window shows 25p just using one field interpolated from each frame. An exception is if the Preview is on Best (Full) quality when I've noticed it shows the complete interlaced frame with combing when there's movement between the fields. Possibly a bug? But all of this is dependant on what the user has chosen as "Deinterlace method" in Project Properties. I always use "Interpolate fields" to preserve the original 50fps. Strangely the default is "Blend Fields" which I consider very wrong as any frames with movement become jerky 25p with ghosting.

In addition to previewing at 50p if I render my 50i to 50p MP4 using either a 50p template (possibly modified) from MAGIX AVC/AAC MP4 or Sony AVC/MVC I get a 50p file where every frame is different showing both fields have been used. You can check this in MPC-HC or VLC players by advancing frame by frame through an area of the video containing movement.

Former user wrote on 2/5/2023, 7:08 PM

@EricLNZ Thanks for that info, I'll try out some interlaced videos, I was using Best/Full when looking at interlaced videos last time.

rtbond wrote on 2/5/2023, 7:28 PM

Still not clear if the VP error message (@ Blu-Ray template @60i via NVIDIA) is a VP limitation or if an NVIDIA issue, nevertheless CPU render @60i works just fine.

@rtbond I saw a forum message saying support for interlaced hardware encoding via Nvidia was removed in 20 series, and you have a rtx2070, so last generation to supported interlaced encoding is pascal 10 series.

@EricLNZ I confirmed what you said about 60 fields converted to 60 interpolated progressive frames. Therefore 2 questions, could Vegas always do that, and if yes, what therefore is the advantage to QTGMC, is it meant to be better quality?

Interesting. I hadn't considered that GPU use might affect how Vegas behaves. With my short "home movies" I try to stick to CPU only rendering. Speed of rendering isn't something that concerns me. It's a different matter for you pros turning out work for clients.

@Former user First question - I assume Vegas can always do that provided an appropriate deinterlace method is used in Project Properties. For me with VMS it's "Interpolate Fields" but in VP you also have "Smart Adaptive" (GPU only).

Second question - I've no experience with QTGMC. My ten year old camera shoots 50i and although I can export this as 50p I prefer to render as 50i AVCHD/Blu-ray and let my TV or PC players deinterlace. As has been occasionally commented by others, players in real time usually do a better job at deinterlacing than software taking its time! Where I need 50p for Vimeo I use Handbrake (Decomb and BOB).

Pick a non-NVENC render template?

Salah wrote on 2/23/2024, 4:58 AM

There is no such error on the CPU. But it's a bit like buying a Ferrari and driving 20km/h. CPU makes it a few hours longer. Without GPU vegas is useless to me.

I did the Update to Build 208, and it looks all ok.

RogerS wrote on 2/23/2024, 7:38 AM

Rendering interlaced video is also like driving 20km/h. Why not render progressive with NVENC in 2024?

Salah wrote on 3/1/2024, 6:30 PM

And it doesn't work again, I didn't change or install anything. The GPU render stopped working, what a program :/. Once it doesn't work other times something else.

You should make your own thread, it's not clear what you are doing and what's going on.
