Explorer tab: audio icon shown instead of Thumbnail in V20 build 403

@Former user, I am not a fan at all with Win 11. The only reason I am on it is because I decided to do a clean OS install on another new NVME drive and decided Win 11.

With the Vegas Explorer, nope... Buffy's clip doesn't show up, even though I made sure to tick in Vegas Explorer, All Files. After a restart of the computer, it is now there. But it took a computer restart for it to appear with Win 11 and VP20.

@Reyfox In Settings - I see this, never bothered looking into it, don't rock the boat so to spk,

Earlier I'd deleted a ProRes file from that folder & also deleted @bitman;s file, but then he said my image was NOK, so I restored the file from the trash, but in Vegas Explorer his file only showed the MPC icon just like in the Windows folder, I dragged it to the timeline, I minimised Vegas, & rebooted Vegas, I don't know what did it but the thumbnails returned as in my previous pictures, I just put it down to some kind of hiccup because i'd deleted n restored it, messing with Vegas's or Windows head.

@Former user I've had to on more than one occasion, exit a folder and then open it to have something I copied to it appear. It's random.

It's too late for me to go back to Win 10.... so I will live with a bloated OS that is constantly updated bring more bloat and who knows what.

@Reyfox

Windows 11 is a no brainer, given the fact it is more secure, has better support for the latest generation intel HW, etc. There is always resistance against change, and people trend to cling to the previous, you cannot imagine how long the (big) company I used to work for, had windows 7 on their desktops and laptops, before they were "forced" to windows 10...

Anyway I am still stuck with thumbnails (of the type .mov prores 422) showing a thumbnail with "still" in Vegas 19 (So OK), and a default thumbnail in Vegas 20 (NOK).

In the mean time I tried Davinci Resolve and Topaz Video AI, and they have also no "still" icon when browsing to import...

@bitman the only reason going forward for me with Win11 is that it will be supported. A lot of the "cosmetic" changes made were for me, unnecessary. The right mouse click context menu on icons being "stunted" was unnecessary and you have to do another click to see additional information. I really didn't care for the Apple look of taskbar icons starting in the middle. Then there is OneDrive....

@Dexcon, I spent some time getting things to where I like them in Win11 when I first installed it a few months ago, and moved the Taskbar icons to the left as in Win10, 7.

It's things like right mouse clicking on say a video clip, and you have MediaInfo installed, that you have to go and use the mouse pointer again to get to that, when with Win10, it was just there. I've changed that too. But that OneDrive thing....

But that OneDrive thing....

@Reyfox  ... do you mean Windows 11 insistence on saving to OneDrive rather than to the relevant folders on our computer? If so, that so very annoying function can thankfully be turned off.

R click on the OneDrive icon on the taskbar and select Settings. Several on/off options appear on the 'Sync and back up' window that opens, and more on/off options are available by clicking on the 'Manage back up' button.

If this isn't the "OneDrive thing", I'd be interested in finding out what the OneDrive issue is.

@Former user  ... Microsoft list the minimum requirements for installing Windows 11 at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-11-system-requirements-86c11283-ea52-4782-9efd-7674389a7ba3

Around the time that W11 was released, I read a few times that TPM (Trusted Platform Module) or even UEFI were going to be the most likely reasons that a computer wouldn't meet W11 requirements. But I've also read in the last couple of weeks that there are workarounds to install W11 on a non-compliant computer. Re this, Microsoft advise: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/installing-windows-11-on-devices-that-don-t-meet-minimum-system-requirements-0b2dc4a2-5933-4ad4-9c09-ef0a331518f1

The question I suppose is whether or not Microsoft will ever relax the minimum requirements for an approved W11 install on computers that currently don't meet the specs.

@bitman, I changed the context menu "issue" early on after I installed Win11. I got tired of having to do another click to get to say, MediaInfo. While a cosmetic change is nice, it shouldn't be at the expense of usability.

@Dexcon, I disabled OneDrive too a while back. My problem is that it is "on" by default. I'm not signed in now either. I have to hunt down my M$ password when I need it.

I don't need "hand holding", or hiding of things I normally use. It doesn't make things easier, but more frustrating. If I do, I'll ask.

@Reyfox a restart did not help, turning of GPU did not help, also putting the files on another disk did not, it just works in V19, but not in V20 build 403 on my desktop. The issue is not the end of the world for me (other video file types have the correct "still" thumbnail), but it is annoying when there is no picture to distinguish files named identical with some indexed suffix. And a regression (V20 vs V19) is never a fun thing.

Question to the Dev's, possibly reading these posts: Is the Vegas explorer code touched in V20 build 403?

@bitman with my Win10 drive, none of the video thumbnails had images. It just disappeared one day. I tried all the resetting, registry, googling, etc., to no avail. Finally, I finally had to download and install K-Lite Codec pack, because if said it fixed video thumbnails in Explorer. Many said don't do it, it can cause instability with editing/rendering, etc.. I installed just the basic pack. It was the only way for me to see any of the images of the files in the thumbnails. I figured I could always uninstall it. But for my Win10 problem of thumbnails, it solved it and never a problem...or none that I noticed. There was another user in another forum that had the same problem, and ultimately installed it to.

You are right, it is a pain to remain files to let you know what that file is.

Well I learnt something from this, MPC Player plays my Particle illusion files like this, pixelated 🤔 😒

This is what it should look like,

& for this post I tried different ProRes renders in PI & other Boris programs, + Adobe Media Encoder that has Adobe or Quicktime to see if I can make Vegas only show an icon & not the thumbnail, no luck but what i did discover is if I export from PI @ Premultiplied Alpha it plays correctly in MPC, the pixelated one is exported Straight Alpha,

In Vegas both show thumbnails & both wok on the timeline (Premut has to be changed in the timeline events properties to make it look right) but the Preview Play in the explorer shows the same in the preview window, one pixelated one not 🤷‍♂️

This is pixelated Straight Alpha preview (the other Premut Alpha is next to it named Particleillusi...)

Like I say both thumbnails show but if you want to try them out n see if you get thumbnails or pixelation ..- https://drive.google.com/file/d/1IaVIMymrGVNGdYOobttnHeAXrNb431Lt/view?usp=sharing

Reyfox wrote on 5/13/2023, 6:50 AM

@Former user, VLC plays back your straight alpha just fine. MPC doesn't. Taking the straight alpha into Vegas, it plays back fine there also. I did the same test here rendering from PI, super sparkle burst 05.

In the Project Media, if I scrub through the thumbnail, it shows the fireworks. But because my first few frames have nothing, it's just a checkerboard alpha look.

@Reyfox Hi, I used to use VLC player all the time but it doesn't like some files, some ProRes or 8k, can't remember but playback isn't always smooth, but yeah to view these PI .mov I do have to open in VLC, I just found it interesting how the difference between Straight & Premut makes a difference.

Yep both playback fine in Vegas for me, it's the preview button top of Explorer where Straight gets pixelated when previewing in the window.

Here's 3, two that don't open in VLC & one that does, strangely one that does & one that doesn't were created in AE about the same time 🤷‍♂️ All look & play fine in Vegas.

@Former user the Explorer tab in VP20 is a disaster for me. I've never used it myself. And while the files I downloaded play fine in VP with Auto Preview on, I had to Import the files. In Explorer, they didn't appear. I also couldn't "drag/drop" to the timeline like I usually do. Head scratcher for me.

Upon exiting Vegas and restarting it, the unzipped folder appears and so does the 3 files in it, I can drag and drop in Project Media or to the timeline without a problem.

But all the files playback in VLC for me without any problems. Using VLC 3.0.16 Ventinari. I know there is an update, but VLC is working fine for me now.
