Extrenal monitor preview freezes entire computer

I believe you will face issues again after a full shutdown of the laptop, not just a restart. It seems that connecting a monitor to the HDMI port has woken up the dedicated GPU, good job! Let's hope it stays that way.

I'll be trying it, after turning it back on again, it's "fresh" and performs better, than after hours of running firefox.
