'file could not be created'

Hi, I've just loaded the trial version of Vegas Movie Studio 14 Platinum. When I try to save the project I get the error message:

"An error occurred while saving the project file...

The file could not be created."

Obviously, this leaves me unable to save my work, rendering the software useless. Can anyone help?

I've searched but this doesn't seem to be a limitation placed on the trial version.

I'm running windows 8 through an Intel Core i7.

Below is the content of an old Sony help page on this subject (last updated in 2010). Maybe it can help you...

Error: An error occurred while saving the file [filename]. The file could not be created

I see a message saying "An error occurred while saving the file <filename>. The

file could not be created." when attempting to save a project or file. What's going on here?

If you are using secondary internal or external drives normally, one test you may want to try is to try saving a project or file to your Desktop rather than to your secondary drives. Does that work? If so, and if the files that you are normally working with are stored on a drive that is not drive C:, then you may want to check your permissions within Windows as they are applied to any other drives that you are working with. More information about this can be found here:

How to Grant Permissions in Vista and Windows 7

  1. Locate the file or folder on which you want to take ownership in windows explorer
  2. Right click on file or folder and select “Properties” from Context Menu
  3. Click on Edit button in Properties window. Click ok to confirm UAC elevation request.
  4. Select user/group from permission windows or click add to add other user or group.
  5. Now under Permission section check the rights which you want to grant i.e check “Full Control” under the “Allow” column to assign full access rights control permissions to Administrators group.
  6. Click Ok for changes to take effect and click ok final ok to exit from Properties window.

Thanks for the help. I've had a go but the error keeps recurring. I'm going to try a fresh install and see if that helps. I'm new to video editing and it's disappointing that such a stupid error should occur, because the program looks relatively intuitive. I've tried Lightworks but prefer something with tracks as I'm used to music editing in Reason. Thanks again for the assistance.
