K,

I have a full-up Digisuite card-set that I'm looking to sell. I'm afraid that I'm not going to give it away however. Contact me privately if you might be interested.

Hi Charles,

I see there are lots of suggestions out there....in video land.

Here's mine:

For many years I've bucked the trends in Video Production...and haven't starved yet.

I live in a Sony town, but I shoot with Ikegami, Panasonic and JVC. I edit in an Avid town, but I've edited for over 10 years with the Video Machine from FAST, purchased for a total of $30K...and have loved the comments I get from clients when they see their commercials looking better over the air than the Avid stuff their competitors use that costs well into 6 figures.

I chose the VM for its feature set, its speed, its quality output and its ability to be a hybrid editing platform.

I chose Vegas for its feature set, speed of use, compositing and audio capabilities. I have converted a number of people to Vegas from other platforms by virtue of the work I'm doing and the speed at which I can do it.

Nuff said about that...

How do I compete? I answer the question with pride...I'm not ashamed I edit on a PC...I tell them why I chose the Vegas System over FCP or Avid, I offer them a reel to look at and invite them over to my studio for a test...they bring the footage, I'll show them how easy I can give them what they want. I NEVER, repeat...NEVER have lost a job with this approach. If they start to hedge, I'll tell them to go try the Avid...spend the big bucks...and when its said and done..if they aren't satisfied...I'll re-do the job...at my normal rates...unless of course, they are now on a deadline...in which case I tell them there will be a rush charge....this usually gives me the job with a smile.

Plus I haven't advertised in years...my references speak for themselves.

Vegas will never compete in the land of Hollywood, because Sonic Foundry isn't interested in marketing Vegas on a higher level...at least they haven't shown interest yet....but they are in Hollywood with their other upscale products and compete well there. I flew into LA for 2 years shooting second unit on B movies and ran into name status issues all the time. That will never change.

Will Vegas ever compete against Avid DV or FCP? I think it does right now....in feature set, ease of use and quality. The rest of the world isn't aware of that...but I am and my clients benefit from that.

Of course, if SF decides to make Vegas Video compatible with the rest of the world....like the ability to import/export EDL's that are standard in the industry....then Vegas will stand a chance of being utilized by those who need this feature....by that I mean "those in the biz".

Remember Charles, you are only as good as your last job. Be proud of that job, offer references from that job, let other people tell your story for you...but never offer excuses for your gear....most clients really don't care...only the status corporate types or the ad agency types show off their inexperience and immaturity by insisting on name brands rather than the creativity necessary to do the job.

Enjoy Vegas...I do...and...FWIW...I like the name!!!

David
(panting with baited breath wondering what version 4 will bring)

Listen, let's put this to rest. This was blown WAY out of proportion. I would never stop using the tools I use, unless they didn't satisfy my clients' actual needs. I am extremely proud of Vegas and I brag about it all the time. In fact I bragged about it to these particular clients. I wasn't trying to whine about a $300 app but just express frustration for Sonic Foundry that they haven't established more of a name with this phenomenal product. You're probably not going to find a bigger SF user than myself - I use Vegas about 10 hours a day at least, and I've been using PC's for editing since Sound Forge 1.0.

Let's not blow this out of proportion and start making assumptions about me, my business, or my clients. You know nothing about any of those things nor am I interested in starting a thread (or continuing one) where we all compare our supposed level of Pro-ness. It's what sickens me about a lot of the posts in this forum to begin with. We all have constructive things to say here, so let's say them and not spray them, ok? :)

onto important threads about what we want from Vegas 4...

I still say we should just call it "Vegamatic," and then get on with more productive threads.

Catching up on my VV reading (recharging my batteries actually) and I see where the biggest gun in digital film-making suggests interoperabilty with industry standard formats, goes on to ask if 24p editing is on the SoFO horizon, and nobody bothers to answer!

You do know who George Lucas is, don't you, SF?

Go to project properties and set frame rate to 24.000 (Film) and Field order to None (progressive scan)

Am i missing something or isn't this 24p editing?
