graduated transparency

Apologies if I'm missing something completely obvious, but can you create a graduated transparency of a still image or a video in Vegas? I'm thinking of something like Vegas's graduated-color media generators, but instead of two graduated colors, graduate the transparency of the frame, so the top, e.g., is completely opaque and from there to the bottom, the frame gradually becomes more transparent until the bottom is completely so. I'm not talking about this happening over time, like a transition, but as a static quality of the video. Thanks for any help.

I think a huge mask with tons of feather might get you the effect you're looking for.

I should have mentioned that I want the track below it to show through he transparent part. Putting the color gradient wouldn't do that, would it? But i'll try the mask idea. Thanks, guys.

The Mask idea works pretty well, though the feather (set to Both and 50%) covers less area than I wanted. Ideally, I'd like to see it extend farther up and down. But this is farther than I've been before! Thank you.

@Widetrack - You're wising to have total Control of the Range of the Transparency. Here's my method:

1] Apply a Linear Wipe Transition. Use this to apply a range of Transparency or ALPHA and the EXTENT.

2] Apply Transition Progress Envelope. Here you can HOLD the effect of the Transition and also the AMOUNT of Feather you apply.

Here are my results:

@Widetrack - Go ahead and apply the Linear Wipe Transition. You will see the Controls in that.

@Widetrack - Once you have any Transition applied you can Control the rate at which it develops. And as you want the halfway effect to happen, here half of the Frame, then applying a Transition Progress Envelope gives a way/method to do just that.

Glad you like it. Yeah, it's a method to switch around one approach - Transitions, here that's 'Linear Wipe' - and FIT it to another - Transition Progress Envelope. It's the way I've been thinking/using Vegas since 2002. But, as @Widetrack has found out me Grammar fails at times. 😊

You're correct. ‘Tis a question that’s been asked through the centuries. No one knows for sure, when called upon the VP flag can be seen flapping over the far horizon.

Another way is to:

- Put a gradient from white to transparent into track # 1.
- Video into Track # 2.
- Background into track # 3.
- Make track # 2 a child track of track # 1.
- Set the compositing mode of track # 1 to "Multiply".

@Marco. -Yup, I’ve done that too. However, I do like finding ways which gets me a result without tying up too much Horizontal Timeline real estate (several Tracks) and requires too much complexity (Compositing over Tracks). The approach I’ve offered is targeted to just that one Event, and that Event only. This also means I can Move the result Up and Down the Tracks in the Timeline.
